Scott Pilgrim - what the hell is this crap?

I'm talking about the actual, physical book, not the content.

$12, and you get this little book, that's not just digest-sized (the intention of which is to make such books more affordable), but with cheap news-print paper - so cheap in fact that the ink rubs off on your hands.

And as if that's not bad enough, it's loaded with printing errors - or the pages are cut wrong. Half of the pages have world-balloons and material on the outside edges that get completely lopped off - a lot of dialog missing the first letter of every word in the balloon if it's on the edge of the pager. But then there's all this extra space in the gutter - WTF? I flipped through all the copies and they're all cropped.

If this was a $5-$6 book, fine - but for $12 that's some fucked up bullshit right there. Imagine buying a novel and the first letter on every 3rd page is cut off - you'd be pissed, right?

Re: Scott Pilgrim - what the hell is this crap?

Look again - every single one I leafed through had different instances of this.

couple examples:

and

and on this page:

just on the left, there's all this space over in the gutter:

I mean, seriously - what the fuck is up with this half-assed shit?
If I were O'Malley, I'd be even more pissed.

Have you looked at other copies? Are they all like that? Or was it a misprint that you got unlucky with?

That's from the first volume, and all the copies were like that - the other volumes don't seem to have this problem, yet (I'm only 3 volumes in).

Can you take it back, maybe find a better print somewhere else?

I have two copies of the first volume, and one's cropped pretty badly and the other's a little better:

(I have a problem...)

Yeah, that's what I'm talking about - and if it were a $5-$7 book, I'd have no quibbles, but for a $12 book (small-sized with cheap paper at that), that's some fucked up bullshit right there!

Re: Scott Pilgrim - what the hell is this crap?

slop101 -

This sounds like a misprint, as none of the pages you post look that way in my copy. From my experience, incidents of bad cropping varies throughout a print run and is virtually impossible to catch on individual copies. Printers shift about an 1/8" (or even 1/4" in extreme cases) in any direction at any given time, so generally we try to keep important info within a certain margin in comics. Hell, I've seen isolated portions of a large print order have pages out of order for no apparent reason, a hiccup on the production line.

I'll PM you, and see what I can do.

Thanks to jamieoni and the guys at Oni Press - they sent me a corrected copy (which I was not expecting). Class act!

Re: Scott Pilgrim - what the hell is this crap?

The copy I just got has the same problem, and some lines are really smudged.
Did you contact the publisher to set up an exchange, or should I exchange it with Amazon?

a GOOD problem, certainly not a bad problem.

I cannot wait for Volume 6 - hopefully at least the title and the cover art will be announced soon. From O'Malley's blog it certainly seems like he's making headway on it.
