From www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com:

What was the budget of Halloween 2?
Or, you know, if it came out around Halloween? Crazy idea, I know. Just gotta avoid Saw by a week or 2 and it'll be gold.

^ This site lists $18 million as the budget. Dont know how reliable but seems realistic.
http://www.themovieinsider.com/m5602/3/h2/
Meanwhile Wikipedia lists The Final Destinations budget at $43 million.

Funny for Who? they are both Weinstein Co. pictures and are gonna make pretty close numbers to each other so I dont see why thats all that funny.

Don't the Weinsteins have The Road coming up? I would think that would have a better shot than Nine, but then, I'm not a box office analyst or anything.

Re: Box Office Thread 8/28-8/30: TWC's Final Destination?
^Yep they sure do hav the Road which I think at one time had a chance to be a big hit. But that was last year when I thought that and before I saw the trailer that kinda mis-markets the film. Still if it is well-reviewed I could still see it doing very good possibly.
Anyways hears more of an update/analysis/commentary form deadline Hollywood:
"Even Hollywood is embarrassed by the fact that this weekend's Top 4 competing films featuring horror, death, gore, mayhem, war, Nazis, aliens, and sci-fi all did so well at the box office Friday. "What a sad statement on movie-going humanity," a top studio exec emailed me tonight. "And let's look at the ratings for the top 4 movies at the box office tonight: 'R', 'R', 'R', and 'R'. Yikes." While Final Destination 3-D and Halloween II were playing in almost the same number of theaters (3,121 vs 3,025), 3-D made the big difference in gross receipts at 1,678 outfitted dates. Sure, The Weinstein Company has been claiming that the sequel to its Rob Zombie horror reboot cost half ($15M) what New Line/Warner Bros' suspense thriller did ($30M). But the fact that these two movies stayed on the same weekend to battle for the same horror fans stunned marketing experts -- especially when this Friday through Sunday is traditionally weak moviegoing-wise as college kids head off to school again. "How stubborn/stupid can two distributors be?" one promotion pro asked me. (It's Chinatown, Jake...) No word yet on how Ang Lee's comedic Taking Woodstock fared; it platformed in 2 theaters Wednesday but opened in 1,393 venues today. Meanwhile, Inglourious Basterds held better than expected with a drop of 60%, not the anticipated 70%."
I didnt realize at first but it is freaking awesome that the top 4 movies are indeed Rated R. When was the last time this happened?

You could combat this by releasing it first week of October, but Rob Zombie made the point on Jimmy Kimmel that on November 1st, people no longer care. "The Santa Clause 3 on December 26th? Ehhhh..."

Remember that TWC has Hoodwinked 2 coming out in January. The first one made quite a bit of money on a small budget so maybe that their real "last chance."

H2 budget was $18mil, but they were doing reshoots up to a few weeks ago. If anything, the film will exit in the high 20's and the Weinsteins make a small, small profit on it. But since they have nothing else coming out, they'll likely lose that money doing something stupid.

Cable sales + video rights + international sales + breaking even in the US = moderate success already.

Future cable sales and future video rights...we don't even know if the Weinsteins can hold it together for a few more months.

Re: Box Office Thread 8/28-8/30: TWC's Final Destination?
^Well well well. Box office MOjo has updated numbers and it looks like Final Destination has less than initially estimated with 10.925 million and Halloween 2 has made a bit more than the initial $7 million estimate with $7.625 million
Also remember Halloween 2 cost less than half of what Final destination made and had less money for advertising than Final Destination had to work with.
Its also cool to see Basterds with already over $100 million internationally now. It should definitely get to $200 million worldwide. Kudos.

Note how there are currently not any trailers for Hoodwinked 2 because TWC doesn't have the money.

I'm not saying they have no money, but they're taking things one step at a time. I would think, for a sequel to a movie that was popular, there would be a teaser for Hoodwinked 2 out by now, but instead they're just now debuting a trailer for a movie that is out in two months.

Re: Box Office Thread 8/28-8/30: TWC's Final Destination?
OH well i think its smart of them to release things one step at a time whether it cause they got no money or otherwise. . It certainly worked for District 9. And kids have short term memories anyways so they probably wont start advertising Hoodwinked 2 until a month or 2 before it actually comes out.

He did say kids and not geeks (of which I am one).
District 9 was pushed more akin to an indie flick than a studio pic. It had posters and Con appearances long beforehand (especially due to the high profile fall through of Halo) and relied on a more viral approach. That works for certain movies, the plot of Hoodwink'd 2 isn't exactly going to be a huge selling point.

From www.deadlinehollywooddaily.com:
I think the extra-success of Inglourious Basterds combined with the only mild failure of Halloween II ($17.5 million is no bomb, anyway) is enough to keep TWC hanging by a thread.

Re: Box Office Thread 8/28-8/30: TWC's Final Destination?
I thought it went by pretty fast. We went to a 10:40 showing Wednesday night and I figured I'd be looking down at my watch a lo. The first time I looked down was close to 1, with about 30 minutes left I think. I'm glad to see it do well, really loved it.

I really, really hope Halloween II comes in third (or fourth, or fifth, or 100th). Anything to prove that the franchise needs to be taken away from Rob Zombie ASAP.
