Never heard it of either.
Very surprised about D9. Only saw a few promos for it. Might have to be a blind buy since I think I'm done with the theaters til 2010.

Wow. This is the first time I've never heard of a movie mentioned in these threads. I haven't seen a commercial, poster, or trailer for that.

Happy to see D9 up there. Hopefully word of mouth will keep the dropoff from being too large the next few weeks.

Awesome for District 9. Wouldn't have expected a movie with a strong South African setting and theme to top the US box office, but it's a great flick.

I've only seen commercials on Nickelodeon. It looks like a typical teeny bopper film but I guess the audience wasn't there.

It gets old when people start going on with this "I haven't seen a single ad for ____ "
As if the world revolves around them or they're the target market for everything.

G.I. Joe held a little better than one would expect. It's right on line with Fantastic Four's run. That film finished with $154 mil in the US. I think Joe can get to that amount.

I don't think so, it's just someone's opinion on what kind of marketing a movie has. Even if a movie's ads aren't targeted towards them, some times you'll trailers or tv spots EVERYWHERE and sometimes they'll be isolated to MTV or something.

I hope it does that, and can finish with enough money, do well on dvd, then a sequel will get the green light.

I pretty much never do this, so indulge me. Here is what I said about District 9 in last week's Box Office thread, and just a few responses:
Really? It doesn't feel like there's much buzz around that movie at all to me. Joe will probably fall to ~25 mil, and my very uneducated off the cuff guess would only throw out ~10-15 for District 9. Of course, I don't have any interest in it so it's probably my own bias.
I agree with this - I have friends who are pretty movie savy and when I brought up how hyped I am for District 9 on Friday, all I got was blank stares. People who have seen the ads mostly have no idea what the fuck this movie is, so I'm not sure it'll open huge. I have no doubt that word of mouth will be fantastic and drive it to great overall numbers, but out of the gate, I don't think it'll blow the roof off the joint...

True, I think people forget that they are getting older, their viewing habits change, they move out of the younger demographic areas and activities. Plus, we are a Tivo generation when it comes to watching TV shows and those pesky advertising spots that get zapped by us on reflex nowadays. Unless I rewind to see a movie ad on TV, I rarely watch commercials anymore unless I'm watching a live sporting event.

I can't say I'm surprised, but look how hard Funny People fell. That's terrible returns.
I wonder if this is the end of Apatow directed comedies.
