Over the weekend, I played some Super Mario World and got the itch to play it without all this VC nonsense. (That, and I my Wii is out on loan).

I dug up my old SNES and, to my surprise, found that I still had a bunch of games that a friend had given me. I've never played any of these. Which do you recommend for me to play?

I'm not usually a huge fan of RPGs. I like ones that make sense and don't have a lot of grinding or puzzles, although some grinding I'm OK with. I don't like any games generally where to get from one level to the next you had to hit an exposed brick on a hallway that you can't see unless you're right next to it, for example. Or throw a special type of potion into a flowerpot in someone's basement. That type of thing.

I wouldn't play any of them unless you're willing to have your saves disappear halfway through the game. Those batteries are dead, dead, dead.

Except Final Fantasy II for SNES is actually Final Fantasy IV, which isn't available for PSP (unless you're remote playing it from a PS3, of course).

Yes. But I really wouldn't worry about it, I have a few hundred NES/SNES games and I don't think I have any that have bad batteries. That's not to say it won't be a problem, but in my experience it's not very common. Mystic Quest and Mario RPG are probably the better choices for someone new to (or casual fan of) RPGs. FF II/III are ultra classics but they made much improved versions on the GBA (as IV and VI, of course). If you're looking for other suggestions for SNES games to look for, I can help with that too.

Really? That's odd. Because of all the battery cartridges I've had, I'd say roughly all of them have failed.

Really and honestly. I bought a nice pack of CR2032s a while ago to prepare for this but haven't had to use any of them yet. I just popped Super Metroid in a couple of week ago and had my old saves on it. When you have had batteries die is it right off the bat (like dusting off an old game) or as you're playing an older game (like, a few days in)?

Sorry...but what does all this dead batteries in games stuff mean? There are batteries in cartridges?

Yes, they keep a very small charge active in order to maintain the small bit of RAM that stores the game's save data.

When they first started putting batteries for save games in cartridiges (first one I remember that that had one was Legend of Zelda on the NES), there were stickers on the back of the cartridges telling you about the battery, and the fact that the battery shouldn't be expected to last longer than 5 years.

Well, what happens is either that it won't hold a save at all or the save will randomly disappear.

Honestly, now that I think about it, the latter sounds more like a physical problem with the RAM.

I love the SNES and this thread has inspired me to bust it out one of these days. I was tempted to sell off those games that are on VC since the batteries are going to die eventually, but can't seem to bring myself to part with 'em. Too nostalgic...

That happened to me too.

Thankfully, I more than made up for it when GameStop was basically giving away cartridge games (40% off plus an extra 10% with the Edge card plus buy two get one free). I hit pretty much EVERY GameStop in the DFW area and cleaned all of them out. I have multiples of all the good SNES RPGs that I need to unload eventually, thanks to that.

LOL! I don't know if all lesbians like the SNES, but, these two that I knew did. They asked me if they could borrow it, and, since we had been good friends for so long, I thought, "Why not?" Well, that was a mistake! I never saw that SNES, again. Man, how I miss that system!
