Your Favorite John Hughes work? (Director, writer, screenwriter)

With the untimely death of John Hughes, I am sure many of us will be watching some of his movies that he has worked on.

What is your favorite movie that he has either directed or wrote?

Ferris Beuller's Day Off for me.

I was a bit too young to get into some of his other movies when they first came out, (Breakfast Club, Pretty in Pink), but you can never be too young to understand the glory of a day off of school.

Just as good now as it was 20+ years ago when I first saw it.

Poll updated it, I don't know why the question can't be held until the options are done

The Breakfast Club is the one that i can watch over and over and find something new. Ferris close second, but i do love me some Uncle Buck as well. imo best John Candy role ever!

I chose National Lampoon's Vacation, though it is a tough choice. I can also watch Sixteen Candles or Ferris Bueller's Day Off any time.

Re: Your Favorite John Hughes work? (Director, writer, screenwriter)

I picked Ferris, but not with any real conviction.

I consider The Breakfast Club to be his "best" film in many ways in that it captured the themes of his 80s work most effectively. However, both PTA and Ferris are more entertaining.

PTA comes pretty darn close to perfection, truthfully, but it was not a "teen" movie. It is incredibly funny yet sentimental and touching (even more so now that Candy has died, at least for me).

Ferris was incredibly daring. It tried so many things, cramming so many unique and disparate comedic elements into its running time that it almost never lets the audience up for breath. It could have easily been a massive disaster or incredibly uneven (or stooped to Airplane-esque slapstick), but almost everything works and the film somehow manages to still maintain a light grasp on realism. It's really rather remarkable.

Tough choices.... and in a good way. In the end I had to go with Ferris.

Re: Your Favorite John Hughes work? (Director, writer, screenwriter)

I almost can't pick. All of these are always among my 'favorites':

National Lampoon's Vacation
National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation
Planes, Trains & Automobiles
The Great Outdoors
Ferris Bueller's Day Off
The Breakfast Club
Home Alone
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York
Uncle Buck

I quote the Vacation series more than any other films (next to Caddyshack and Ghostbusters), but all of those are films I lived for growing up and still watch regularly. I just saw PT&A and Home Alone 1 & 2 in a mini-marathon about 2 weeks ago. Too hard to pick just one.

Although The Great Outdoors is easily one of my favorite movies, have you never seen Planes, Trains & Automobiles? Truly his best.

Planes, Trains & Automoblies: This movie is so underrated, and so many classic lines: "Didn't you notice when you were talking to me I started reading the vomit bag!!"

I just realized I own 10 DVD movies that John Hughes was associated with

Bueller....Bueller....

I love the original Vacation movie, but went with Ferris Bueller's Day Off since he had more of a role with that film as director/writer.

Ferris. All of them are just great though...having to narrow it down to one is a real challenge.

Cmon - FERRIS!

It is so choice. If you have the means, I highly recommend picking one up.

-What's happening, my main man?
-Right on!
-Scotch.
-Straight up?
-Give me the whole bottle.
-I'll tell you what. Why don't you bend over, and I'll shove it straight up your ass.
-On the rocks is fine.

I like Weird Science alot because of it's silliness but to me his best film is The Breakfast Club.

Re: Your Favorite John Hughes work? (Director, writer, screenwriter)

Breakfast Club.

Still one of all-time favorite movie quotes:

We accept the fact that we had to sacrifice a whole Saturday in detention for whatever it was we did wrong. But, we think you're crazy to make us write an essay telling you who we think we are. You see us as you want to see us: in the simplest terms, in the most convenient definitions. But, what we found out is that each one of us is: a brain...and an athlete..and a basket case...a princess...and a criminal. Does that answer your question? Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club.
Weird Science is a very close second due to Kelly Lebrock.
