Please, Please, Please Help Me!!!
Here is the situation. I have nearly $400 dollars to spend at amazon.com and would like to buy a digital receiver to replace my old Onkyo-424 prologic one. (I have older Yamaha speakers NS-A836 and 636's as rears, also have the Bose double cube speakers with passive sub, don't know what room I will put the new recevier in!)
It seems like I have two choices. They are as follows:
JVC RX-8000VBK
or the
Harman Kardon AVR 100
I have read reviews for the JVC, but I haven't found many for the HK. Which is the better receiver? What to I do!
HELP ME! PLEASE

I have the jvc model except it was the jvc-888 which was last year's model. I like it for my needs, I can't really afford to buy high end stuff so this will do. I did notice some hissing on the speakers when watching some dvds. I believe the jvc model you are asking about is identical to mine. Overall i'm pretty satisfied.

Topgun94- Not really, I'm like an hour and a half from anywhere that carries these, and I just was in Circuit City this weekend and got to play with the JVC, it seemed really nice (except for the lack of ac power cord inputs, and all the fuss about the hiss in last years model)
I didnt get to hear it, because no one at CC was around. They also had the HK there, but I didn't even look at it, I didnt know it was an option at the time. So basically, it will be about 2 weeks before I get out there again. Thats why I wanted input from fellow users.
Hope to hear something, thanks.

I did some checking on the Circuit City website and found this
The JVC has several advantages including
more power
dsp modes if you want the option to use them
DTS decoding (a must)
1 more audio input
2 more video ins
4 s-video ins, Harmon has none
and a few other minor things.
If JVC has fixed the hissing problem I would go with the JVC. The Harmon is probably the better built receiver, but to bring the price down they have cut out a lot of features.
Hope this helps. If you get a chance try to listen to both units.

I didn't like my JVC 884 (power rating was inflated) and it had center channel hiss problems. Maybe the 888 is better, but I doubt their power numbers for that model either. I'd say it's really only 60-70W/ch in 5-channel operation.
The HKs are solid receivers, and if it has enough inputs for you, then, I'd suggest going with the HK 100 (or if you can swing it, the 300 is a better choice).

You should get the Poineer 509
It has Dts, and has very high marks, and rated best buy by many hardware review sites.
It is $349.00 as well, and has no hiss or overheating problems.
The reciever is on amazon.com's site

Looking for a new sub-400 dollars receiver myself. Did a check on the Pioneer 509 on pricescan.com - the lowest price was a measly $252 from "Let's Go Digital". But, if you're only limited to amazon.com, perhaps you'll have to pay the higher price. Also, looked at the JVC 8000 - it was around $285. What is the difference between the 6500, 7000, and 8000 JVC's? Do all these receivers hiss?

If you are interested in JVC stuff go to www.crutchfield.com. They have good info on most receivers. By the way, I've heard this unit and it sounds pretty good and it's true that it's 75 Watts per channel in 5 CH mode.
In stereo it's about 100-120(almost no distortion).
P.S. Most JVC, Sony, Pioneer, Kenwood units have overrated power numbers.
