Re: What books/playsdid you read in school?

I usually read a book a week or every other week. There'd be no way I could list this.

Maybe this earlier thread could generate a few choice quotes and replies:

It is hard to remember, since it has been decades for me. But it is an interesting exercise to try. So, in no particular order:

Books:

Huckleberry Finn (in addition to Twain’s masterpiece we also read some short stories such as The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County and The Man that Corrupted Hadleyburg)
Les Misérables (really liked it; we read an abridged version, according to the teacher the extra stuff about the priest would have been very boring)
To Kill a Mockingbird (wonderful book)
Great Expectations
Hard Times
Moby Dick
Two Years Before the Mast
Gulliver’s Travels
A Modest Proposal
(short story)
A Cask of Amantillado (this short story was too gruesome for me; I hate the horror genre with a passion)
The House of Seven Gables
Madame Bovary

Catcher in the Rye (didn’t finish it because I despised the Holden Caufield character; to the best of my recollection this is the only book I never finished, once started)
Lord of the Flies (didn’t like it, I am baffled as to why it is so popular)
The Pearl (didn’t like it, too much of a downer)
The Stranger (hated it)
Metamorphosis (ditto)
We also read quite a bit of Freud, but I can’t remember the specific titles
We (Zamyatin)
Brave New World
1984
Animal Farm
Farenheit 451

Madame Bovary
The Most Dangerous Game (short story, still remember it)
The Prince (Machiavelli)
Romance of the Rose
Gargantua and Pantagruel
Beowolf
The Odyssey

The Aneid
The Republic (Plato, really boring)
A John Locke book, I think it was An Essay Concerning Human Understanding but all I remember was that it was really boring
A book by Montesqieu, also really boring (it should be obvious that I despise philosophy)

Plays:

Romeo and Juliet (“But soft, what light through yonder window breaks? It is the east, and Juliet is the sun.”)
Julius Caesar (twice, once in high school, once in college)
Midsummer Night’s Dream
Macbeth (also twice, once in high school, once in college)
The Tempest (“O brave new world, That has such people in’t!”)
You Can’t Take it With You (wonderful, a favorite)
Our Town (meh)
The Birds (I also read Lysistrata because it was in the same book of Aristophanes plays, which I still have)
Oedipus Rex

Those are the ones that come to mind, I’m sure there are lots I’ve forgotten

Re: What books/playsdid you read in school?

Here's what I can remember:

As You Like It
When Legends Die
A Light in the Forest
Fahrenheit 451
My Antonia
The Good Earth
Midsummer's Night Dream
Julius Caesar (abridged)
Arsenic and Old Lace (abridged) (These two were from the year we spent in Decatur, Georgia. They didn't have as much respect for schools.)
The Magician (Sol Stein's book really stuck it to lawyers. When his publishing house, Stein and Day, was destroyed, he had a letter published in the New York Times blaming vengeful lawyers.)
The Car Thief
Bless the Beasts and the Children
A Catcher in the Rye
One Day in the Life of Ivan Denisovitch
David Copperfield
Anna Karenina
Madame Bovary

Re: What books/playsdid you read in school?

Since you asked for what was actually read, it's pretty easy for me. I read To Kill A Mockingbird. Everything else, I skimmed through or caught a version on video. Sad really, since I do enjoy reading. Just never responded well to being told what to read.

Re: What books/playsdid you read in school?

Things I recall, in no particular order. I have included a few short stories.

Romeo and Juliet - William Shakespeare
Our Town - Thornton Wilder
"The Tell-Tale Heart" - Edgar Allan Poe
MacBeth - William Shakespeare
Julius Caesar - William Shakespeare
The Crucible - Arthur Miller
Death of a Salesman - Arthur Miller
Bridge to Terabithia - Katherine Paterson
The Diary of a Young Girl - Anne Frank
The Cay - Theodore Taylor
Island of the Blue Dolphins - Scott O'Dell
Where the Red Fern Grows - Wilson Rawls
The Best Christmas Pageant Ever - Barbara Robinson
To Kill a Mockingbird - Harper Lee
"The Most Dangerous Game" - Richard Connell
Frankenstein; or, The Modern Prometheus - Mary Shelley
"The Raven" - Edgar Allan Poe
The Outsiders - S.E. Hinton
"The Lottery" - Shirley Jackson
The Mouse and the Motorcycle - Beverly Cleary

Also, I know I read Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury in high school though I can't say that it was something the entire class read. I think it was one of a handful of choices presented to each of us, and that was my selection. It was the first time I ever read an entire book in one setting.

Re: What books/playsdid you read in school?

Elementary

The Pearl
Maniac McGee
Charlotte's Web

Middle School
The Outsiders

High School

The Once & Future King
Tale of Two Cities
1984
Brave New World
Lord of The Flies

I also remember Sadako..., pretty sad. King Arthur was really boring at the time, mostly because of the difficulty in writing style. The Crucible was good.
I mostly enjoyed all the High School reading books except for Snow Falling On Cedars. I really had to struggle to not fall asleep reading that book.
