Penn & Teller Bull****: Lie Detectors - 07/23/09

Showtime, 9:00CDT

Lie Detectors

Polygraphs are used in thousands of investigations and job screenings, but can a machine really detect whether someone is lying? Penn and Teller meet people whose lives were ruined by faulty lie-detector results.
I'm really looking forward to this one. Many people have way too much confidence in these things. There's a reason they've never been admissible in court.

Next week: Organic Foods, another good one

I don't know shit about lie detectors (although I've been skeptical of them), so this should be interesting.

This is probably my most anticipated episode ever. I've been burned by a lie detector so i know how bullshit they can be.

There was an episode of The Wire where they have a guy take a lie detecter test and the operator just basically said "We can make the results say whatever you need us to say." I wondered if that was accurate.

Looking forward to this one too. Lie Detectors are junk science and it boggles my mind that we still use them in law enforcement (I had to take one pre-employment). I wonder how many good people have lost out on LE careers because of something as faulty as a Lie Detector.

I don't know if I really need to see Penn and Teller tell us what is BS in the organic food movement.

Re: Penn & Teller Bull****: Lie Detectors - 07/23/09

Before this started, my wife said "Why are they doing lie detectors? Everyone knows they're bogus." I had to remind her of the episodes of Homicide and the Wire where they tricked suspects into confessing by using a xerox machine as a lie detector before she admitted that maybe some people out there think lie detectors are real.

I feel sorry for the strip club dude getting his engagement broken off like that, although given the woman's behavior, maybe it's for the best.

Now that is vintage P&T Bullshit. One of their best shows ever. Not too much wasted time and right on point.

It's surprising just how crude the polygraph looks close up. It surely is an ancient looking piece of equipment. I have been rewatching Outer Limits (original series) episodes and just about every one has those sixties gadgets and control panels that must have seemed so technologically advanced looking and cool at the time. The polygraph looks like those 40 year obsolete things.

That was a brilliant episode. Everything that really is wrong with the polygraph was covered. I only wish police agencies would wise up and stop using these damn things. Really fucks over tons of legit people.

Yep - great episode. At first I felt sorry for the bachelor guy, but they're right - he's better off without that broad. Telly Savalas is a real douche.

Hard to believe that lab (which is presumably scientific research) would rely so heavily on polygraphs.
