Science Fiction Recommendations

Over the years there have been many movies in the Sci-Fi category that I have found to be enjoyable but lately I have been having trouble finding new material to feed my hunger for Sci-Fi.

Recommendations welcome.

Name some of your favorites, and we'll come up with more along the same lines.

Thanks, it sounds like fun. I would almost be ashamed to admit just how much Sci-Fi I actually watch.

So the challenge for you would be to start late and still win.

which version of 'The War of the Worlds' do you own, the original is a classic and the special edition has two commentary tracks.

Sorry, I missed that one and have corrected it. I own both the original and new versions.

Re: Science Fiction Recommendations

I honestly don't know why the 2005 version is always getting bashed. I personalty thought it was a great remake, sure the Aliens "goofed" it up a little bit, but overall its a highly enjoyable movie that is definitely underrated..

Re: Science Fiction Recommendations

^ I generally like the remake too - but as Scary Movie 4 brillantly parodied it, the role of the teenager son was grating and dumb beyond belief. The SFX though was incredible and the appearence of the pods over the hills about to descend on the folk getting on the boat was genuienily terrifying

even though they're TV shows, X-files and Dr. Who are awesome.

Re: Science Fiction Recommendations

I would go with Firefly. You can get the series fairly cheap on DVD these days. It also has a follow up movie, Serenity. Western/Sci-Fi goodness.

Thanks for the suggestion but I didn't really care for Firefly or Serenity when they aired on TV.

Re: Science Fiction Recommendations

Well there are lots of worthwhile TV series that aren't on that list - the new BSG (and original), Farscape, Jericho, Jeremiah, Earth Final Conflict, Andromeda (yeah...definitely "meh", but it is sci-fi), Starhunter, Starhunter2300, Sliders, Odyssey 5, etc

As far as movies...Sunshine, Wild Blue Yonder, Escape from New York, Forbidden Planet, Hitch Hiker's Guide..., Flash Gordon, Dune & Children of Dune miniseries, Farenheit 451, Earth vs Flying Saucers, etc

Re: Science Fiction Recommendations

The list above is representative and is only a part of what I actually want and own. I would need to add many more titles for it to be complete. I currently own Sunshine, Escape from NY, Escape from LA, and many more.

Also, I want Sliders, BSG (new and old), Babylon 5 and many others.

Please keep the suggestions coming.

Re: Science Fiction Recommendations

Sci-Fi is one of my favorite genres and I also watch a lot of it. Here is a list of some scifi movies not on your list that I found entertaining. They may not all be great and certainly not all worth owning but they entertained. Also, I'm not one who complains much about logic in a science fiction movie. I own some of these but rented a majority of them recently.

The Hidden
John Carpenter's The Thing
Children of Men
Stardust
Knowing
12 Monkeys
Mad Max
The Road Warrior
Gattaca
They Live
X-Files movie (Fight the Future NOT the 2nd one)
Waterworld
Outland
Dark City
The Core
Pitch Black
Doomsday
Outlander
The Mist
Runaway
Deep Blue Sea
Capricorn One
The Arrival
Deep Rising
Stargate (movie)
Strange Days
Timeline

There were others I rented that were not entertaining enough to remember...
