I'm trying to help a friend of mine set up his first Home system. He wants to spend a total of $900.00, looking for a decent system. We found the Yamaha RX-V595 for around $280.00. We know that it doesn't have DTS, but thats not a big deal. I'm really not sure which speakers to set him up with. He's moving into a new house with the living room size of 20x20 approx. So that leaves him with $600.00 for speakers. He is hoping to include a 10 inch sub with the package. If there are other suggestions for a receiver that would be great. Thanks in advance for everyone's help.

With the limited budget, pass on the sub
for the first phase of the system; it can
always be added later.
The Yamaha 795 is a good receiver as well,
for about $550 or so at OneCall.com
For a $600 HT speaker setup that is not
comprised of tiny boxes, just run a search
on this forum for "Speakers", and read what
turns up for at least an hour to get a good
feel for what's out there.
Good luck.

Personally I'd go with a nice PAIR of speakers and get a decent receiver (onkyo 575, or a used digital ready receiver) I got a THX certified Marantz SR-96 receiver for $450 used, which would blow away anything else in that price range. Speakers, check out Paradigm, Monitor Audio, and NHT. I'd get the Monitor Audio Silver 3i's. Beautiful speakers for about $450-500 new. Or even the Magnepan MMG's which will impress anyone who looks at them (large flat panels factory direct for $500, and $300-350 used). Good luck, e-mail me if you want more specific answers.
