Rocketeer wasn't a bomb. It just didn't make as much money as Disney expected...and they expected a lot. They had sequels planned (everyone was contracted for 2 more films). When it didn't pull in the big bucks, they dropped it like a hot potato.
It wasn't a bomb along the lines of Speed Racer or Ishtar. It was more like a hand grenade.

Joe Johnston is a good director. I've enjoyed a lot of his movies, and I think he'll do a really good job with this.
Just as important as the director, though, is the script and the casting. They've got to get the right guy to play Cap, and the script has to be good otherwise it won't matter who the director is.

'Captain America' enlists two scribes
Christopher Markus, Stephen McFeely in negotiations

Christopher Markus and Stephen McFeely are in negotiations to pen Marvel Studios' "First Avenger: Captain America." The dealmaking occurs about a week after Joe Johnston boarded the project as director.
Marvel's Kevin Feige is producing.
Created in 1941 by Jack Kirby and Joe Simon for Timely Comics, Captain America is the heroic alter ego of Steve Rogers, who is rejected by the Army for being too sickly and undergoes an experiment that takes him to the pinnacle of human form. Paired with an indestructible shield, he becomes a symbol of the war effort, fighting Nazis and villainous scientists like the Red Skull.
In modern times, the character starred in his own long-running comic series and also was a charter member of Marvel's superteam, the Avengers.
Kicking off with "Iron Man," Marvel Studios' slate of movies -- including "Thor" and the "Iron Man" sequel -- is building toward an "Avengers" movie set for release in 2011, in which the characters from the films team for one big adventure. "Captain America" is scheduled for release May 6, 2011.
Marvel's "Captain America" will be a World War II-set movie, and the character will appear in the modern day-set "Avengers."
Markus and McFeely, repped by UTA, worked on "The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe" and its sequel, "Prince Caspian." The duo also wrote HBO's "The Life and Death of Peter Sellers."

I think Joe Johnston is solid. Rocketeer had good style, Jumanji had good pace and Hidalgo had enough dramatic moments that I think he can make this one work...hell, even Jurassic Park III was put together well (I don't fault him for the lack of a third act - I blame the budget). I'm psyched that he got the gig directing Captain but I fucking hated the Narnia flicks and thought their scripts were pretty poorly written - so my excitement has just dropped a notch with the addition of these two guys.

The First Avenger: Captain America (2011, Johnston) - News, cast, rumors
I was wondering what everyones thoughts on casting for this should be? I have read a lot about casting Will Smith in the role, but that to me is just utterly wrong. I believe that Aaron Eckhart would make an excellent Cap. He has the chin, the hair, the voice and the stature to make it work.

I like Noirfan's suggestion.
If it ends up being Will Smith, I won't even watch it.

This guy. He seems to be in everything else coming up, so why not Cap America too.
