I have noticed that all the TVs I have hooked in at my house have a problem with small parts of the picture becoming distorted. It is kind of hard to explain. The problem is most promonant if I have a menu up, like a dvd main menu for example, and the words on the menu will sort of "follow" any object that passes behind it just for a moment. It happened today as I watched Psycho. On the special features menu, the background picture contains flashes of lightning. Each time the lightning flashed, the whole menu shifted out of place for a second. I also notice it when an object (usually a straight line of some sort) goes out of the shot, and just as it passes out of view it "bends" as it leaves the edge of the screen. It will also happen if something in the background is still, while something in the foreground moves around, the movong object will cause the background object to shift around. It is fairly subtle, but it is really annoying me. And since I am aware of it, it bugs me all the time. I know the problem is not the dvd or player because it happens when I play video games, and when I watch TV (it happens a lot with stations like QVC which always have menus on the screen). Is this a common problem with tube TVs? Has anyone had this happen to them? Thanks for any support.

Your contrast is too high. Lower it, or get Avia or Video Essentials to callibrate your TV.

Ok, I lowered the contrast as far as it goes and it only slightly improved the problem. Now the picture is very dark. Will Video Essentials be able to eliminate the problem, while still keeping the picture bright?

The screen isnt suppose to be bright in the first place.
I would say the contrast should be in the 70% range or lower. Yes I recommend VE or Avia.

That's strange. You say it should be 70% or lower, but when I was having the problem the contrast was set at 50%. Then I lowered it to 25% and the problem remained. Maybe there is something else wrong. Could the quality of the TV have anything to do with it? It is most noticable on my 26" RCA.

Calibrate with Video Essentials or
Avia, you'll definitely see an
improvement in color and picture quality,
as well as minimize any distortions caused
by incorrect settings.

A must for anyone who is more than a "casual"
HT fan.

If the price turns you off, you can rent
either at netflix.com for $3.00.

Good luck.

Hi,

The problem you're describing sounds like maybe you're running your TVs at a brightness/contrast level that it can't handle well. Try playing with the two levels to see if you can't make the problem go away. It may be that once you've found a level where these problems go away, the screen will be much darker than it was. If this is the case then the problem is due to limitations in your TVs' circuitry and there won't be much you can do about it except lowering the ambient light level in the room to make your screen look brighter.
