Twilight to Underworld: What is it about Vampires that makes hearts pound?
"What is it about immortal blood sucking broodaholics that makes women swoon? Is it the danger? Is it the biting?"

Sex sells, simple as that. Vampires are by far the sexiest monsters out there. Blame Anne Rice. I'd say all modern day vampire fiction has been heavily inspired by the aristocratic, civilized characters in her books.

What does Twilight have to do with Vampires?

Vampires are, imo, the least appealing of all movie monsters. It's all a bit off putting.

Vampires to me are quite boring as movie monsters go. I think Gumby strikes more fear than the average vampire.

I think most people have a fear of death. I believe some of the attraction to vampires is the promise of "immortality." That's why there has been a move to the "friendly" vampire. People like the idea of immortality, but not that you have to kill innocent people to get it so much.

Twlight seems pretty stupid to me I mean come on a vampire that is hundreds of years old sure as hell won't spend his time in high school.

Not for me. I've loved the genre well before Interview with a Vampire and quite frankly, her take on vampires really doesn't do it for me.
Simply, vampires are sexy, strong, they are night creatures, quite often are really good looking, have powers, but are vulnerable to the most mundane thing as light, are wisened by their age...you rarely see a vampire dress poorly (outside of Near Dark). Plus, they're dangerous...you're putting yourself in peril by wanting to be with one.
It's an ultimate fantasy version of dating the bad boy...which in real life doesn't work at all.
BTW, you couldn't pay me to Twilight.

I love vampires but Underworld and Twilight are not shining examples of great vampire movies.

Another unrealistic thing about Twilight, and really all stories featuring vampires who act young and trendy, is that wouldn't somebody who's been alive for 200+ years an like an old fashioned fuddy duddy, despite their outward appearance? It just seems weird that they are up on all the latest trends, into the latest music, etc. just because they externally look 18 or whatever. I think about how when parents try to be cool and use their kid's lingo but get it wrong, and it just turns out embarassing. You'd think a 200-year-old vampire trying to pass as their outward age would have similar issues but on a much greater scale.

That's a great idea for a comedy right there, DRG. Well, as long as you keep it far away from some asshat like Will Ferrel or Adam Sandler. I think if played straight, there's the makings of a great comedy in the notion of an ageless immortal trying unconvincingly to pass for 18.
As for the Underworld franchise, they're not really vampire flicks. They're action movies mainly that just happen to have vampires and werewolves as their central characters. Even Len Wiseman admited as much in one of the special features of the theatrical cut DVD of the first movie.

Vampire movies, to me, are films like The Lost Boys, Near Dark, Daughters of Darkness, Horror of Dracula, Dracula '31, etc. Hardly any of the shit made today even qualifies. I think the best example of a good recent vamp flick is 30 Days of Night, flawed as it is.

That's exactly how I would not want to see such a movie made, Ash Ketchum. I'm thinking of something in the style of Stranger Than Fiction (you know, the non-Will Ferrel movie that happened to star Will Ferrel).

I know the secret behind Underworld's success and it has NOTHING to do with being a vampire flick, it's:

Not in a film, but as part of a pop culture phenomenon, he's perfectly valid in this discussion.

I've seen the ads for Twilight, and they show the "vampires" running around in full daylight. Somebody should give the creators of this crap a call and explain what a "vampire" is. YOU'RE DOING IT WRONG. FAIL!

Re: Twilight to Underworld: What is it about Vampires that makes hearts pound?
Not to defend Twilight (or fall into the trap of a Groucho post ) but Gary Oldman was walking around in full daylight while being a vampire in Bram Stoker's Dracula. Of course there's an accompanying narration by Anthony Hopkins explaining that vampires can be in daylight but their powers are diminished.
My problem with Twilight is that, although I can accept the notion that film is basically saying that vampiric myths are wrong, I don't see anything in these X-Men rejects that would have inspired popular vampire myths.
