Box Office - Memorial Day Weekend '09 - Dance off! Salvation vs. Smithsonian
Alright it's a bit presumptuous on my behalf, but I don't think Dance Flick will be giving a major challenge to Terminator or Night at the Museum 2.
Terminator: Salvation opened Thursday so I figured I'd get a head start with its thread.
Thursday Box Office:
1. TERMINATOR SALVATION WARNER BROS. 3,480 13,375,000 3,843 n/a 13,375,000
2. STAR TREK PARAMOUNT 3,860 2,985,000 773 -47% 161,638,970
3. ANGELS & DEMONS SONY 3,527 2,615,000 741 n/a 60,106,814
4. X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE FOX 3,892 815,000 209 -52% 155,257,700
5. GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST WARNER BROS. 3,150 550,000 175 -30% 42,142,958
6. OBSESSED SONY 2,634 275,000 104 -34% 63,895,243
7. 17 AGAIN WARNER BROS. 2,450 190,000 78 -26% 59,313,694

Interested to see how Angels & Demons and Star Trek hold up.
Edit: Slow day at work.
NATM2 will have a huge Saturday and Sunday.

Terminator: Salvation now has the 20th highest Thursday total. For Thursday openers, it is #6, right behind Marley and Me (opened on Christmas).
Box Office Mojo says the production budget is $200 million. Yikes! They've been promoting this alot as well, so I'd say the real budget is at least $250 million, but probably more.
It also earned $3 million in midnight sales.

As bad as Terminator was, I still hopes it beats NATM, if only because I think America should take a stand against crappy Ben Stiller comedies.

Yeah, the $3m got rolled into Thursday's gross. It made about $10m during the day and $3m at midnight. Not the strongest, at this point it can go either way.

I have faith that T4 will beat out NatM, but the showing I went to last night was only about 45% full. Maybe everyone is waiting for the weekend. Well, that, or most people didn't realize it opened yesterday. A lot of people I talked to thought it was opening Friday.
My weekend predictions (Th-Mon)
1. T4 - $96m
2. NatM - $62m
3. Trek - $29m
4. A&D - $23m
5. Wolvie - $11m

I can't believe I didn't suffer an aneurysm or heart attack upon seeing the trailer for the new NATM before Star Trek.

Terminator Salvation wasn't bad, it had its flaws but it was fun, so in order to get the fifth film (that should be epic), get out and see T4!

Edit: And just want to be clear, I only saw part of it on HBO. Couldn't get past 30 minutes. One of the worst "comedies" ever.
BTW, have you seen Ben lately promoting this film? He looks awful.

I remember being so pissed that NATM 1 beat Rocky Balboa and people on the boards shouted me down that NATM did well because it's a "family film". I can see good family films like "insert Pixar film" doing well, but I hate when people go see family films just for the heck of it. I caught NATM on cable and it really is awful. I liked it better when it was called Indian in the Cupboard.

I dunno. Out of everything that's out right now, I'd much rather see Star Trek again. Transformers is the only other one I'm looking forward to.

Do it! It deserves multiple viewings. The perfect summer film. Of this or any year. I've seen it twice so far. First in digital, then on IMAX. I'd gladly go again too.

I disliked Terminator but hope it beats NATM 2. I have no problem with the first Museum flick doing the numbers it did when it opened - it LOOKED good, but then it was just a boring, joyless piece of shit...so now the second one people should know better. The reviews say it's better but still sucks, so hopefully the masses will take heed, but I doubt it. I've got a fox movie cash coupon lying around and can't sit through Wolverine again and have even less interest in Ice Age 3, so I may end up seeing Museum 2, but it'll be free.

Friday numbers (from Box Office Mojo):
1 NIGHT AT THE MUSEUM: BATTLE OF THE SMITHSONIAN
Fox
4,096 $15,300,000
-- / $3,735
$15,300,000 / 1
2 TERMINATOR SALVATION
Warner Bros.
3,530 $14,845,000
+11% / $4,205
$28,217,000 / 2
3 ANGELS & DEMONS
Sony / Columbia
3,527 $6,050,000
+131% / $1,715
$66,161,000 / 8
4 STAR TREK
Paramount
4,053 $5,775,000
+93.8% / $1,425
$167,409,000 / 15
5 DANCE FLICK
Paramount
2,450 $3,900,000
-- / $1,592
$3,900,000 / 1
6 X-MEN ORIGINS: WOLVERINE
Fox
3,183 $2,100,000
+158.9% / $660
$157,354,000 / 22
7 GHOSTS OF GIRLFRIENDS PAST
Warner Bros. (New Line)
2,255 $1,100,000
+101.7% / $488
$43,238,000 / 22
8 OBSESSED
Sony / Screen Gems
1,603 $575,000
+99.6% / $359
$64,483,000 / 29
9 MONSTERS VS. ALIENS
Paramount (DreamWorks)
1,434 $280,000
+50.7% / $195
$191,926,000 / 57
10 17 AGAIN
Warner Bros.
1,107 $270,000
+45.8% / $244
$59,579,000 / 36
So first day NATS2 beats 2nd day TS, and Dance Flick falls behind all the big early summer films except for Wolverine. It'll be interesting to see how this list shakes out as the weekend continues. My guess is that the first two spots will remain the same, but A&D and Star Trek will flip spots. If Trek holds the pattern it has had the past couple of weekends, I'd expect it to improve its numbers on Saturday and Sunday.

Wow, I really thought T4 would be doing a bit better. I might be in the minority, but I want to see a T5 because I hope that McG can learn from what didn't work in T4 and make T5 a tighter picture.

Yeah, I'd agree with that. Thursday through Monday, Terminator may get the top spot, but I'm figuring Night at the Museum 2 will have a strong weekend with families, so we'll have to see which gets it for Friday through Monday.

Congratulations to Star Trek for a lot of things! Depending on how much Up ends up making, Star Trek will be the #1 or #2 of the May releases, which few foresaw.
Box Office Prophets' analysis of Terminator has it as a disappointment for Warner. Most analysts had Terminator being the #1 movie for May.
