If I want to watch a movie in two parts (at night and in the morning, etc), how do I convince the player to save its spot while powered down for the night? My old Panasonic did this; does the Toshiba not know how?

Press pause and let it shut down by itself. After it shuts down you can press play and it will start from where you paused it.
