How do you organise yours?

Evening all (well, it is in the UK! )

I'm in the process of building my DVD collection, and currently have in the region of 600 titles. Just wondering whether you organise your collection alphabetically or by genre, or something else?

Hoping to get mine all in some sort of order tomorrow.

Cheers,

Alphabetically. Organizing by genre runs into too many problems; as does organizing by any other method.

Alphabetically here. It's really the easiest way.

Alphabetically as well. A friend of mine, whose library is twice the size of yours, tries to order them by actor and frequency of watching. We're seeking counsel for him.

Re: How do you organise yours?

I organize my collection by the studio that releases the film. Paramount, Warner Bros, Sony, Disney etc.

I think I did this because Warner Bros had those odd snapper cases which didn't match the standard Amaray-style case. They looked better when they were stored together on the shelf.

I think the uniform spines look better when they are stored in this way.

Re: How do you organise yours?

I sort mine by the theatrical release dates but only sometimes by DVD releases for old movies getting re-released or what not

Alphabetically of course. I do, however, have 2 separate "collections" with all the Disney-kids-family friendly movies grouped together for the youngsters to pick something from.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Welcome to the forum, and have fun with the organizing. I envy you and the ease of working with only 600 titles.

Organizing 4-5000 titles is virtually impossible for me. Due to space, I simply can't display them all. It would not be physically possible in this time/space continuum. So I have a lot of stuff in binders, or on bookcases that can go two deep. On those, I mainly put TV seasons, where I can store things more easily to enable me to know/remember what is in the hidden back row. I can have something like seasons 1-4 and 10 in the first column, with seasons 5-9 behind them.

My main movie collection is on a wall of shelving, about 2000 films alphabetically.

But since they all won't fit on that wall, I have other bookcases with shelves devoted to certain genres or series. One shelf has all my Disney films, TV series, and books. One shelf is all Star Trek and Star Wars. One shelf is all Kevin Smith books and movies. One bookcase is all Christmas titles.

But for the most part, and if I had the space, everything would be strictly alphabetical.

Re: How do you organise yours?

I dont. I did have a western section, a noir section and criterion but I ran out of space along time ago so they are here and there. I had like over 2000 back when one of those tracking places I used shut down/or you had to pay in 2002/2003. Never kept track after that.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Who's going to be the first to link to the 100 existing threads on this topic?

Anyway, right now a good chunk of my collection is in boxes due to a lack of space. When I can get proper shelving set up mine will be back in alphabetical order. I do separate TV and movies, and I have a few small sections for things like concert DVDs, stand up and documentaries.

As an extension of this, what does everyone do with their HD and BD? Right now mine are both apart from the SD. I've toyed with the idea of mixing them right in though. With them in their own section I find myself going straight there to pick a movie and completely neglecting the hundreds of SD titles. Not to mention I'm starting to end up with some series spanning multiple formats.

Same here. I also keep my boxed sets separate, and I have a separate shelf for Disney/Pixar DVDs, and one for Midnite Movies.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Thanks for all of the feedback!

I'm toying with a couple of idea's myself - either stricly alphabetical or seperating my boxsets (probably only 10 or 12, so will fit on one shelf) and Star Trek (each season of each series) and then the rest alphabetically.

All alphabetical would be very nice, however at the same time I'd like to keep all of the star treks together, rather than running onto seperate shelves as some seasons have picture spines.

Once it's all sorted, and I have more than 30 posts so that I can post links to external pictures - I'll share my collection in the collections thread.

Thanks again!

Re: How do you organise yours?

I have several ways of organizing ...some by:

-Director/Actor - Pretty much just Cronenberg, Anderson, Smith, Carpenter, Lynch and Schwarzenegger films at the moment.

-Case type - All the HD slim cases, snapper cases, boxed sets and some of the double-wide Alpha cases are bundled together.

-Genre - Westerns, Martial Arts, Sci-Fi, TV series and pretty much anything that doesn't fit in the other categories.

-Studio - All the Midnite Movies, Hammer films, most Criterions, etc.

-Collectible packaging - The majority sit on the top of the shelves.

Usually the type of case takes top priority over the others, but it depends.

Some people are just more "clever" than the rest of us it seems. But it is interesting to see different styles just the same.

As for my own ..currently all over the place and in boxes. Only in a "temporary" apartment that was broken into two years ago - so the majority of the collection is elsewhere.

But I have big dreams ....

It will end up looking similar to the following (in alphabetic order broken down by) ....

Hollywood (All)
TV/Other (All)
Japanese (Pink/Sukeban Films)
Japanese (Samurai Films)
Japanese (Yakuza Films)
Japanese (Anime)
Japanese (Other)
Korean (All)
Chinese (All)
Foreign Other (All)
Boxsets (All)
Custom Case (All) - for showing off.

Fairly similar to how my DVDAF catalog is currently segmented with U.S. films being the exception.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Alphabetically of course. For some reason, none of my friends can believe that I took the time to organize close to 700 titles. Of course, when you start at #1...it's not very hard!

I keep my Blu-Ray/HD-DVD seperate, then DVD (movies), documentaries, music concerts, stand up comedy acts. TV Shows have their own seperate stand.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Everyone says mine is overly complicated. I broke them down into genres and then by director/actors. Criterions are together as well as tv shows. Horror is by far the biggest section. I recently started weeding out some bad buys to conserve space. I'm tired of walking in three different rooms to pick out a movie.

Re: How do you organise yours?

Most of my collection is in alphabetical order. TV box sets are alphabetical as well. Blu-Rays too. I've broken up a few into separate collections:

Bond Films (in order of release)
P.T. Anderson Films (order of release)
Spielberg Films (order of release)
Tarantino Films (order of release)
Burton Films (order of release)
Kevin Smith "Jersey Saga" (order of release)
Star Wars Films (Episode order, TV Shows then Documentaries)
Godzilla Films (order of release)
Romero's Dead Films (order of release)
Disney Films (order of release, Direct-To-Video, Pixar [order of release], Live Action Films [order of release], documentaries)
Batman/Superman/Batman Beyond/Justice League sets & movies (continuity order)

I have a "hidden" collection tucked away under the stairs which houses my Doctor Who DVDS (Episode Order), Foreign Box Sets (The Host 4-Disc Set, Casshern 3-Disc, etc), OOP titles and metal cases (Walt Disney Treasures, Steelbooks, Oldboy, etc).

I use to have my Criterions in their own collection as well but have recently intigrated them into the main collection.

Shit. I need help.

Re: How do you organise yours?

I don't have many box sets but the majority that I do have are TV box sets, which are filed alphabetically after movies. As far as movies go; my two Herzog boxes are under "H," Kubrick under "K," Marx Brothers under "M," and my Man with no Name trilogy under "M."
