Wow. Just wow.
I had no idea Billy Bob could be such an ass.
How dare he steal Joaquin Phoenix's act!

Re: Billy Bob Thornton ruins the careers of his bandmates
The blow by blow account...
It's every journalist's nightmare: an interview with a star that goes horribly wrong. In a 6 a.m. interview Wednesday morning in Toronto, Canada, on QTV, Billy Bob Thornton refused to answer questions posed to him by the show's host, Jian Ghomeshi, and then, when confronted by Ghomeshi, lectured the host on how to do his job. Thornton -- on tour with his band The Boxmasters promoting their third album this year, Mod Billy -- took offense that Ghomeshi mentioned Thornton's film career during the introduction for the show. It's unclear why this is such a terrible transgression, but from that point on, Thornton evades or ignores Ghomeshi's questions. When asked about his band being together for only two years, Thornton responds: "I don't know what you're talking about." And then, when asked the question more directly, says, "I don't know what you mean." It goes downhill from there. The band is currently on tour with Willie Nelson, but when Ghomeshi asks Thornton, "What do you learn from Willie Nelson?" Thornton responds: "I've never met him." The tension builds to a confrontation, with Thornton telling Ghomeshi that the host was "instructed not to discuss" Thornton's film career. Ghomeshi respectfully tries to resolve the situation and move on, but to little effect. At the end of the segment, when the band is supposed to play a track from their album, Thornton says the band will be performing without him because he didn't bring his drums. He soon afterward stands up and walks out of the studio. What's particularly odd about this incident is that Thornton, who won an Oscar for his screenplay for Sling Blade and was once married to Angelina Jolie, is typically one the best interviews around -- funny, engaging, a born storyteller and willing to psycho-analyze himself (and his co-stars) on the record. Given that, there's already speculation floating around the web that Thornton was under the influence for this interview. His spokesman, Arnold Robinson, says that is flatly untrue. "Billy Bob clearly just had an issue with the guy," Robinson says. Robinson confirms that while it's true Thornton does not like to be asked about his movie career while he's out promoting his band, Ghomeshi was never "instructed" to avoid the topic. "Bottom line: we don't tell people what questions they can or cannot ask," Robinson says. Apparently, Thornton just wasn't in the best mood this morning, but he doesn't seem to have had a change of heart in the hours since. When asked if there were any apologies or group hugs after the segment, Robinson laughs. "I don't think so, no."

To be honest, I'm impressed by the way the radio dj reacted.
Classy approach.
Billy Bob had a point, but he enforced it way too much.

That's one of those real life moments where personality shines through by a celebrity that actually decreases my fondness of them by a great degree. Wow, talk about a douchebag.

He was being an ass, but his answer about the movie monster contests cracked me up for some reason. I wonder if the interviewer had previously said something about them that Billy Bob considered more disparaging than the intro. He mentioned how he didn't appreciate his music career being called a hobby, but I didn't hear the interviewer say that. Coupled with the fact that he had already made the decision not to play on the show, I'm guessing something had pissed him off before he got there.

I'm not really sure how he ruined the careers of his bandmates, but OK.
He was on the radio here a few weeks back and it was a great interview. He definitely was willing to talk about movies then.

Billy Bob Thornton apparently never learned that when you're promoting a new band (and, yes, Billy Bob, that IS a new band) you don't want to come across like a total a-hole and turn potential listeners/buyers off.
I wouldn't be surprised if the band kicks him out after this. That would certainly get them some attention.
What a jackass...

Well, if anything this probably gave his band a boost, at least from an awareness point of view. I'd never even heard of them until I saw this. Although, he sort of disses the entire country of Canada there ("they just sit there"), so he could have lost quite a few Canuck fans.

People tend to NOT buy albums (or movie tickets) that are made by people that they strongly dislike. Look what happened to Tom Cruise.
Billy Bob was condescending and obnoxious and just a world class jerk in that interview, and not it's been seen all over the world thanks to the internet. That's not the kind of attention his band needs.
Kicking him OUT of the band over that - now THAT is the kind of attention that would be good for them.

Re: Billy Bob Thornton ruins the careers of his bandmates
Guess he didn't want to play because he didn't want to be late meeting Ed Harris and Joaquin Phoenix for a round of morning drinks at the pub down the street.
Personally, I've never been too keen on actor/musicians. Unless your name is Zooey Deschanel, I don't want to hear you sing/drum/whatever.

If he's going to act like this big of a douche to a host who was trying his best to be respectful of him, I hope a future host acts just as disrespectful to him:
"And here in the studio with us today is the one, the only, Mr. French-Fried Taters himself, Billy Bob Thorton! So Billy Bob, which gives you the biggest high - pretending to nail Halle Berry with her naked flesh pressed up against you on screen, or performing with your brand spankin' new band on stage?"

Sorry Billy Bob, but repeatedly mentioning yourself in the same sentence as Tom Petty does not even put you in the same galaxy as him musically.

The Famous Monsters thing and the frequent Tom Petty references were almost SNL-esque, but I have a feeling this will be just a blip and not a Joaquin Phoenix-size fuck-up. If you noticed, everybody was talking low and BBT wasn't the only mumbler.
Also seemed like he was playing his Bad Santa character after downing a Xanax.
