when a title is on xbox AND PS2, is xbox version always better ?
I made a list of games that I'm interested in, and most of them were released on the xbox AND the PS2.
When I've compared photos (at gamespot) of the xbox and PS2 versions of a game, it usually seems like the xbox version has graphics that look a little better.
But I wasn't sure if this is true for a small or a large percentage of the games that are available on both systems, and I wasn't sure if these differences are going to be noticeable only when you have the system hooked up using the best possible connection and/or hooked up to a high-budget tv.

I would say that it is generally true, but not always. It is not likely to be true for games that were developed on PS2 and and later ported to Xbox with little care. You could check out reviews of various titles to find actual comparisons though.

Most multiconsole games were nearly identical from what I recall, the glaring exceptions being the Splinter Cell series which is vastly superior on the xbox and Metal Gear Solid 2 which is a bit better on the PS2. You gotta do a little research.

Thank you all of you.
"You gotta do a little research."
Is there a website that would facilitate that process ?
gamefaqs.com has pretty much been the only website that I've been using to look up reviews and pics of xbox and PS2 games. But as far as determining whether the xbox or PS2 version of a title is better, it seems like with gamefaqs you'd have to read through every user review until you chance upon a review where the user compared the two versions. And sometimes the pics on gamefaqs help in figuring out whether a version has a graphical advantage, but at other times the pics taken are poor in quality and therefore not as helpful when making a visual comparison.

This is nothing more than a hunch though, and just trying to facilitate a faster way to determine than reading a ton of reviews.
I always thought IGN did a decent job comparing them.

I remember people saying the Need for Speed games were better on PS2 due to a better sense of speed.

Also take into account the controller, as the Xbox only had two shoulder buttons compared to the four on the PS2 controller. This is a huge deal on a game like, say, SSX.

I know the big EA sports games were always slightly better on the Xbox.
Honestly, I would think more in terms of when you're likely to upgrade. Some Xbox games can be played on the 360 (which you might get in a few years), and all PS2 games can be played on some PS3s (confusing, I know).

Thank you again everyone for the help.
I guess it'd be unlikely to happen, but I wish that PS2 backward compatibility would be added again to the PS3 down the road. From what I understand, the new PS3s on the market had that feature removed; and if I wanted backward compatibility I'd have to find a used early PS3 unit.

I've seen used backwards compatible PS3s in Japan at game stores being sold for more than the retail price.
