I know it's nice to get a perfect video and audio experience when watching a DVD, but sometimes the video or audio may have problematic characteristics which can either drive you nuts or may not even bug you at all. What are some examples?

I DON'T MIND:
1. grain, scratches, hairs, burn marks (usually it's on older movies anyway).
2. audio remixes (such as changing an original mono soundtrack to a DD 5.1 one)
3. 4:3 full frame (it used to bug me, I would always zoom in to fill in HDTV, but now I leave it alone)
4. 4:3 full frame cropped to be anamorphic widescreen. (The Shining and Full Metal Jacket, for example)
5. Action movie DVDs with just 2.0 Stereo or Mono Sound instead of DD 5.1 or DTS (it used to bug me if a DVD didn't have DD 5.1)
6. Dubbed animated films



I MIND:
1. I just can't watch any pixilation (usually on letterboxed dvds) or obvious interlace linage
2. Motion blur
3. Audio out of sync
4. widscreen movies cropped to be Full Screen/Pan & Scan
5. Dubbed live-action films, especially when there is no language choice for the original audio.

Heavy edge enhancement kills me. It's why I still don't own Die Hard 3.

Audio out of sync gives me a headache.

Any fault that actually causes you physical pain is obviously apalling.

I have to agree with Cactus Jack. Out of sync audio will kill the movie. And a great action movie should always have a 5.1 mix or DTS.

What bothers me:

AUDIO: Hissing noise during quiet moments (ex: Phase IV and some of the other Legend Films DVDs)

VIDEO: Non-anamorphic widescreen (nearly intolerable on my 11-inch portable DVD player).

Out of sync audio is my biggest pet peeve.

Audio encoded to the wrong channel is another pisser (when an on-screen object goes right and the sound pans left.

Banding on newer animated titles (Afro Samurai).

Harsh pixelation during dark scenes or in general (acceptable if on a low budget film/release)

No real complaints on matting/letterboxing (such as Todd's reference to Full Metal Jacket) either, if one - I'm not aware of it or two - if the composition is not off (people's heads getting cut off). But going the reverse direction bothers me ("formatted to fit your screen" - ugh)

Out of sync audio is an irritant. One new one for me is subtitles that lag significantly behind the audio/video of the film, I haven't seen this much with western titles, but Bollywood titles are plagued with it. I don't have a problem yet with non-anamorphic titles since I'm still SD and watching on a CRT monitor. No original language track is awful also. That is just about all I can think of off the top of my head.

I'll add complete subtitle drop outs. The Japan Shock release of Zero Woman is terrible in this regard. Do Bollywood (aside from timing issues) titles suffer from this as well?

1) I hate when some dvd movies are not anamorphic. Especially Van Damme's Lion Heart being full frame with no widescreeen release. It irks me everytime I decide to watch it, knowing that Universal could have released it widescreen but chose not too.

2) I hate when the layer change is slapped on a part where the actor is talking or there is intense action on the screen.
