Sound issue. Can anyone help?

I have a 40" Toshiba LCD, and a Sharp Blu-Ray Player. I have no speakers hooked up to it. The player is connected to the TV with an HDMI. Now the problem is that the sound, Only on certain discs, is atrocious. It seems that the audio on standard DVDs plays considerably louder than the audio on Blu-Ray discs. I hope I am explaining this well enough. Anyone have any ideas why this may be?

I'm not all that familiar with the Sharps but the sound should not be that poor. I would double check the output settings on the player. Also make a note of which discs you are having trouble with. As an example; perhaps they are trying to play uncompressed sound through the TV and it can't play it without distortion.

The discs I've had this issue with are the Godfather Trilogy, Rachel Getting Married, Iron Man.

What can be done about the uncompressed sound?

Go in to the audio set-up menu. Sometimes there is a choice of 5.1 Dolby Digital and 5.1 uncompressed or 5.1 PCM or something similiar. I don't have Godfather or Rachel, but if memory serves Iron Man does have both those choices. See if alternate soundtracks helps.
