Plug pulled on Blender

http://adage.com/mediaworks/article?article_id=135539

NEW YORK (AdAge.com) -- Alpha Media Group closed Blender magazine today, eliminating about 30 jobs and reducing its portfolio of titles to Maxim alone. The April issue of Blender out now will be its last.
Wonder what will happen to all our 10-20 year subscriptions?

The issues were getting more and more anorexic by the month and I can't imagine anyone would pay $5 for an issue.

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

I had a freebie I let run out last year. It wasn't a bad magazine, at least in the bathroom. I have a cheapie to Spin now and like it much better.

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

I used to like their discography ranking sections, even if many times they seemed designated to give a weaker album 1 star when it was more a 3 star effort.

I found some good stuff in there. Sad this happened as I still had another 10 years free subscription.

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

I had a feeling this would happen when the issues kept getting lighter and lighter. My sub is good until 2016 so I wonder what (if anything) is going to take its place.

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

Blender was pretty awful for the most part, I found the reviews to be the worst...but yeah oh well about my subscription
the mag was getting thinner and thinner though.

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

Use to enjoy when they selected a classic band, and rated all their albums. Probably was going to let my sub run out (due to the scaled back version they were putting out), but I'll miss it just the same.

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

Well, poop. I thought they were quite good for a while there kind of channeling the great UK mags like Mojo and Uncut, but in the last couple of years they really seemed to lose their way. The last few issues were rather thin and the emphasis on skin over substance was getting old. Shame to see it go though, because frankly any competition to the very tired Rolling Stone/Spin music magazine monopoly in the US is welcome.

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

that sucks

they covered music only unlike rolling stone which is more of a political magazine.

Stuff and Blender went out of business the last 4 years.

Long overdue IMO. What a piece of crap. It was so idiotic and worthless I canceled my free subscription.

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

I agree. Blender was starting to go downhill in the last year or so. I used to like reading it every month, and have noticed it turning into a "pamphlet" more and more lately.

Bummer. Even Spin isn't all that great. Maybe every other month I'll find something half-way decent to read in it.

Bummer. I always figured that the magazine would fold before my free sub (good until April 2022) ran out, though.

I really liked that feature. Also enjoyed "Greatest Songs Ever" and "Ask Blender." Sure, the reviews weren't always the best, but I did like the sheer number of them (from different genres).

They will always hold a special place in my heart for naming Gary Numan's Cars as the #1 greatest New Wave song (and rightly so). ::cries::

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

Well, what do you expect when you have Lil Wayne on every other cover and he is mentioned abundantly in every issue of the past two years. I thought the fucker had just bought the magazine and was going to change it's name to Lil Wayne Is God.

Fuck Blender. Terrible music magazine. Even though my subscription was free, I could rarely find anything worth reading in it. The best feature was the article each month that covered the history of a huge pop song...but even that feature had gotten poor lately.

Oh well. I still don't know why I suddenly started receiving their magazine sent to my house out of nowhere.

I liked the humor of Blender, like the captions were always funny.

Re: Plug pulled on Blender

I had a whatever-year free subscription and kept the new issues in my bathroom as reading material for when I took a dump. They won't be missed. This magazine was worth less than my bowel movements.

That's the problem...all the best music and movie magazines come from other countries. It costs me $10 for a copy of Empire at Borders. You think this country could come up with a good product(especially a decent magazine for movies....I can't think of one from here).

Yep, one of the nice things when I moved from the US to New Zealand a couple years back is how easily I can pick up Q, Mojo, Empire and the like now.
