Sita Sings the Blues (Nina Paley, 2008) - Available Free Online

I watched this animated film at the Museum of Fine Arts this weekend and loved it. When I went back home to read more about it online, I found that the filmmaker has made the entire film available for free:

Despite the cute-sy animation, the film is definitely geared towards adults, using the story of the Ramayana as a parallel to a modern-day relationship. The focus is on the Ramayana, and the film makes it easy (and fun) for viewers to follow.

The film features a different type of animation to tell each component of the film, and it's all very well-integrated together. It uses Annette Hanshaw songs to propel the Ramayana narrative forward in several Flash-based musical numbers that feature a Betty Boop-like Sita.

Here is the IMDB page: http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1172203/

It also has a 100% rating on RT (albeit with only seven reviews): http://www.rottentomatoes.com/m/sita_sings_the_blues/

It's funny and heart-felt, and I highly recommend it - I wouldn't be posting about it if I didn't.

Edited to add: Among the download options, there is a 720p AVCHD image that you can burn onto a DVD to play on a Blu-Ray player. Big thumbs up to the filmmaker for being so liberal with all these viewing options.

This is the best animated film of 2009, along with Secret of Kells! Watch this or buy the dvd! This film is not for kids!

Nina Paley has an animated short called "This Land Is Mine" about the land called Israel / Palestine that's been repeatedly going viral:
