DVD Talk review of 'The Last House on the Left'

I read Jason Bailey's DVD review of The Last House on the Left at http://www.dvdtalk.com/reviews/read.php?ID=36662 and...
I must say I disagree with the views on the music in the film and the humor. I think the songs in the film are very good, with some being haunting and melodic, and "Baddies Theme" being comedic and twistedly upbeat. The other nonsongs in the film used to score various scenes are a mixture of dated funky stuff, and occasionally good disturbing cues. It's the more dated portion of the films soundtrack in my opinion. The songs though, I think are of pretty high quality(Now You're All Alone etc) and I actually own the soundtrack.

The use of humor in the film I think is great, and helps make for a bizzare and unconventional viewing experience. The tone changes so much from scene to scene, that it can throw viewers off on just how they're supposed to react to the material. And there is more dark humor in the film than just the cop scenes.

The dinner sequence with the gang at the parents home when they ask what they do for a living, among other things has a lot of both subtle and not subtle humor to it. When Krug asks "Mind if I smoke" after already going in to light his cigar,is just one of many darkly amusing bits scattered throughout the film.

I do think this makes for a much more entertaining and memorable film than the deadly serious remake, that is for sure. It may be a low budget crudely made amature learning as they go film. But it's definitely one hell of a good flick in it's own right with nice pacing. I think it's a **** out of **** star film in my opinion. While I'd rate the much more competently made remake ** stars at best and thought it was mostly dull to sit through.
