Movies similar to Synecdoche, New York
Please forgive me if this topic has already been covered, but I could not find it through searches. I saw Synecdoche, New York recently and was really blown away by practically everything about it. I have read a lot of philosophy and like exploring deep topics, especially in movies.
I'm ok with pretention, stuff that is overdone, outlandish and almost impossible to follow. I like to see stuff that is original, especially directors/artists taking major chances. Of course I enjoy mainstream stuff as well.
So I guess I'm looking for films similar to this and that have that dream-like/surreal/philosophical quality to them.
The ones I am a big fan of:
Fellini's stuff (especially 8 1/2 and Juliet of the Spirits)
All of Charlie Kaufman's stuff
Any David Lynch (especially the big ones, Eraserhead, Inland Empire and Mulholland Drive...)
2001
Irreversible
City of Lost Children
Donnie Darko

It seems like we have similar sensibilities, so I'm going to recommend:
The Double Life of Veronique
Valerie and Her Week of Wonders
Picnic At Hanging Rock
Gozu
Company of Wolves
Cemetery Man (a.k.a. Dellamorte Dellamore)
Suspiria
Angel's Egg (animated film)
I still need to see Synecdoche, New York, but I'm looking forward to it.

Check the movies that are part of the Dogma manifesto (Europe).

These are some really great suggestions...I can't wait to check most of these out (as many as I can get my hands on). I appreciate it!

I would EASILY recommmend Mulholland Dr. if you haven't seen it already. It's very much in the same vein, although more of a thriller/mystery; a movie to question and analyze, and one that will have you thinking for a long time afterwards. Plus, you know, girl-on-girl action.
EDIT: Whoops, I see you're a fan already. Time for me to get me old man reading glasses...
I'd also recommend some of the great films by Jodorowsky, like El Topo and especially Holy Mountain.

since you like disturbing stuff like Irreversible, i recommend Todd Solondz's 'Palindromes'.
it's a surreal work of art - surreal in ways that Charlie Kaufman portrays, but definitely more fucked.
