I've thumbed through the Comic/GN but never read it.
Anyway, I think it helps if you have interest in the rumors and theories surrounding Jack the Ripper. I do, so I thought it was a decent thriller. But I also agree with the poster above concerning the villain casting.

I didn't care for it, but then I'm a big fan of the graphic novel. When your main character is so boring you have to change him from a married cop to a widowed, heroin-addicted psychic to make him interesting, maybe you're reaching too far.
If it had kept Gull as the main character, like the book, it would have been more interesting.

It was wasted potential that didn't live up to the graphic novel, but it's at least worth a rental, imo.

After you get past the dreadfully boring first 30 minutes (it took me two days to watch the movie cos I took it out of my player after the first 30 minutes and then watched the rest the next day), it becomes rather watchable. I don't remember ever loving it but if you find it for $10 or less, it might be worth checking out. In fact, rent it first.

I like the movie quite a bit, and I for one actually liked the villian. That having been said, Heather Graham is woefully miscast and is the worst thing in the movie.

Heather Graham's only good acting role to my memory is Boogie Nights..and she wasn't all that important in that one...though she was nice to see naked.

As for From Hell, all I can really remember about it was being really disappointed. I was a big fan of the Hughes brothers first two films and I guess my expectations were too high. I haven't seen it since it was in theaters so I'd like to see it again without all the expectations I had the first time.

A Ripper movie that tries to stay as true to the facts would actually be pretty boring, there's documentaries for that, cinematically this was a good movie with lots of creepy stuff. I like the title too, comes from the supposedly only authentic letter from knife boy himself
