Greatest Special, Limited, Ultimate, and Deluxe Dvds ever made...

I have been searching the forums for some time now hopeing to find a thread like this. I would love to know which dvds people take pride as thier greatest special edition (includes packageing and dvd discs/content). I thought maybe i would start it off by throwing out some obvious ones...

Oldboy-Tin box
Big Lebowski-Bowlingball edition
Casablanca-Ultimate collector's edition
Six Feet Under-Us Entire series box set
Seven-Platinum edition
Fight Club-special edition

Also please someone tell me what special edition comes in the wooden box that says "toy box" on the cover.

Re: Greatest Special, Limited, Ultimate, and Deluxe Dvds ever made...

I'm gonna nominate Anchor Bay's Bad Taste Limited Edition. Cool packaging, a nice booklet, and one of the best featurettes I've ever seen, called "Good Taste Made Bad Taste", which just includes all sorts of awesome stuff in it and made this release memorable for me all by itself.

I know in Region 4 they released another special edition that also included a commentary track with the cast and some other odds and ends. Jackson has said numerous times that he's going to revisit his older titles, so here's to hoping he lays down a track, and we get both plus the featurette and new extras in some future US release. It's already a great SE with just the featurette, so anything extra is just additional icing on the gross-out cake.

Re: Greatest Special, Limited, Ultimate, and Deluxe Dvds ever made...

Offhand...

Lawrence of Arabia - 2 disc edition with replica of original movie souvenir booklet; the cloth/fabric-y package is sweet, as are the features. A shame there's no commentary track, though. How perfect/ironic would it have been had Spielberg provided one?

Sin City - Recut. Extended. Unrated. - I love the features, I love being able to watch the film as a set of short films instead of one theatrical feature, and I love the inclusion of a reprint of the original comic; the only knock I have is the double-layered disc tray.

James Bond - Ultimate Edition boxed sets, Volumes One through Four - comprehensive, definitive features and the slim cases means that the whole set takes up far less space than previous editions. There are some complaints, though: Since the booklets don't fit in the individual movie cases, they're thrown into the boxes rather superfluously; also, not only is the DVD artwork generic, but the packaging is cheap. The top of my Volume Two wasn't even properly glued down when I bought it brand new on the day of release.

Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves - Extended Version - Because more Alan Rickman is always welcome, especially in this role. The bonus features are nice, and for once a studio replaced the movie poster artwork with something that actually looks good--maybe even better.

The Wizard of Oz - Three-Disc Collector's Edition - I have absolutely no idea what they could possibly add to make the forthcoming five-disc edition, because this set has just about everything but a download of the script and a replica of the ruby slippers. My copy (which came from Columbia House) mistakenly included two sets of photo cards instead of one set of each of the included bonuses, but from what I could tell, the whole thing was truly top-tier DVD goodness.

There are other special editions and whatnot but..I don't think those are of great importance as say...the Oldboy Tin Set. I own Minority Report but...it's always a 2 disc set so it's not all that special or rare. Re: Greatest Special, Limited, Ultimate, and Deluxe Dvds ever made...

Xena Warrior Princess, especially the later seasons, have the best supplements of any television series. Cast members, writers, producers, all participate in numerous audio & video commentaries... Rob Tapert analyzing & discussing the legend is facinating. The only drawback, they didn't include the great "Battle On" show teasers/trailers...

Flags of our Fathers/Letters from Iwo Jima/Heroes of Iwo Jima box set.

The X-Files complete series box set.

As mentioned by a few above, the Pearl Harbor 4-disc set is awesome, especially if you love History Channel documentaries on WWII

Solid Snake PAC's post pretty much covers all the other ones on the top of my head.

I will third the praise for the Pearl Harbor 4 disc set. Say what you will about Michael Bay, but that set is LOADED with extras.

I'd love to get the Ichi The Killer set..but the chances of a scratched or smudged disc cuz of the packaging is a huge pet peeve of mine. God knows, I return enough stuff back to Amazon only to get an exchange which later fixes my issue.

When it comes to packaging, I love the Japanese Alien Quadrilogy that comes in the alien bust. The Planet of the Apes set in the ape head is fun too. I'm also fond of my Astro Boy tin and The Others housed in a dead book.
For bonus materia and alternate cutsl: Dawn of the Dead Ultimate Edition; Grindhouse; Pearl Harbor: The Director's Cut Four-Disc Vista Series; Blade Runner; Criterion's Brazil.
