Sorry, I am at work, - are these on the volume sets that were the edited ones?

Would rather buy this set.

These are the 60s cartoons. Never been on dvd before. It's says 1:33 aspect ratio, thought I had scene the credits in widescreen on Cartoon Network.

knowing WB and their history with the cartoons, they will PC it to death, or screw the pictures up

also, why not do The Chuck Deitch era before releasing this era ?

I'm not complaining. Better this one than nothing at all the way I look at it.

Re: Tom & Jerry Chuck Jones Collection - June 23/09

There were only 12 Gene Deitch shorts made, so it would have been very easy to include these with this set, for sake of completeness.

I also think that many of the Chuck Jones shorts were made in Panavision... Can someone confirm this, or is my memory failing me? Hopefully the OAR will be maintained in this set!

I've seen some of those Gene Deitch cartoons on Cartoon Network. They are really terrible (although I like the character designs better than Chuck Jones'), but I would buy them on DVD, if just to complete.

The aspect ratio questions are now answered...

I saw one of the Jones shorts in 35mm and it looked correct in 1.85:1.

Sort of sad this means we'll probably not see the Gene Deitch cartoons. They're funny and I like the animation style. Surprisingly violent, too.

Re: Tom & Jerry Chuck Jones Collection - June 23/09

So, just to be clear, as I'm a little thick:

These were animated in FS, but artistically and visually designed for matted WS by the writers, directors, animators.
They were shown in matted WS first, in theaters.
Then, they were shown open matte on TV, in FS, with no pan and scan or cropping.
And now, on DVD, they're back to matted WS?

I really don't intend to get into a WS vs. FS or OAR vs. non-OAR debate, but I wish they could have provided both. I grew up watching these in FS, so WS *might* be "correct," but what's "correct" is a debatable point when it comes to something like this. I don't think a pan-and-scan The Shadow or Timecop counts as a debatable point--they're abominations to most--but in this case, the two sides have valid points, I think. I'd like to see the FS versions to be able to compare. It's a different viewing experience, and I don't have a nostalgic feeling about watching Tom & Jerry on a big screen.

And no, I don't have a WS TV.

That aside, I'm still interested in the set, and I'm glad that studios are making the effort to preserve artistic integrity--at least sometimes and in some ways.

Re: Tom & Jerry Chuck Jones Collection - June 23/09

I can't wait for this. I'm clearly in the minority, but I'm a Jones junky, so these shorts are my favorite Tom and Jerrys... I'm also psyched about the widescreen. While I appreciate those who would prefer a choice in the matter, I'm eager to see these as originally projected! I grew up watching Back to the Future open matte on TV, but wouldn't go back to it after getting my Widescreen dvds. Also, I am loving the box art on this, miles ahead of the previous sets.

To me it's the same as the first season of the animated Justice League series from a few years back. The producers went into the project with a 1.77 aspect ratio in mind from the very start, but Cartoon Network was leery of doing a widescreen show, apparently they were afraid it would make the children cry or something. Anyways, everything was framed and animated as if it were 1.77, but they would just draw in extra sky and feet to make it 1.33. Cartoon Network showed both versions, and the show eventually moved to straight widescreen production. Yet both the DVD *and* the BluRay releases of S1 of Justice League use the 1.33 open matte versions.

I've watched older Looney Tunes and whatnot that I know were animated 1.33, but framed with 1.77 matting in mind by zooming them on my widescreen TV and the difference is pretty amazing. I'm really glad to see them making the proper effort for these T&J shorts.

This looks great and I dig the cover art. Any chance of a Fred Quimby set?
