So I want to start watching Oz...
But I need to know what the drama-to-ass-raping ratio is for this show. I have two teen girls at home who always tend to wander into the room when the wife and I are watching Six Feet Under or some other cable show where there's just balls out sex or some other uncomfortableness going on.

it's a great, great show but definitely not for prying eyes if that's what you're worried about - there is a lot - a lot - of full frontal male nudity ( and a little female too ), sexual situations, language and violence and if i recall just about every episode had a big combination of the above.

every episode features at least one beating, rape, stabbing, shooting, riot, or other violent assault(s).
having said that, OZ is one of the best shows i've ever watched. i genuinely felt sad during that last shot of the last episode.
one of the greatest reasons to watch this show is the incredible cast that you will probably recognize if you've ever seen Homicide, The Wire, Dexter, LOST or a few other great shows. once you've watched OZ, you notice that almost every major character is now on some other great show.
if your kids aren't too young it wouldn't be a deal breaker but... yeah, as great as OZ is, especially as a complete experience, it pushes the limits of expression even for an older show. like i said though, once you get used to watching beecher and keller making out in the laundry room or somebody writhing on the floor in agony after getting both of their eyes stabbed out, it's all downhill from there.

BTW from Wiki:
Looks like lots of Muff!
Showtime President of Entertainment Robert Greenblatt spilled some details of the recently-piloted The L-Word spin-off: It will star The L Word’s Leisha Hayley and will be a “very different, substantially different show” from L-Word, he says. Hayley’s character Alice Pieszecki goes to jail, where the new show would be set. While L-Word, which will conclude as a series after its yet-to-premiere sixth season, focuses primarily on a community of lesbians, the spin-off would involve a broad spectrum of characters, including some lesbians, Greenblatt says: “It’s a big group of characters and there’s a few lesbians in that group but it isn’t the exact makeup of what the L-Word was.” When asked if it is a “female Oz,” he says that was “not a bad description,” though it would not be as dark as Oz, the gritty, former HBO series. Three guest stars appear in the pilot and may or may not go forward on the series should it get picked up

You should watch the show late at night in bed with your wife --it's a real mood setter.

First three seasons are great...next three or OK.
Good stuff though...especially if you like Tom Fontana.

Jeez. It is HBO. It isn't even softcore porn. There is nothing that is explicitly pornographic about it. Believe me, your daughters probably already have a fairly decent idea about sex by now - and they really SHOULD to a degree. Not saying you shouldn't try to shield their innocence a little, but not being able to watch a TV show in private while they're in the house? Watch it somewhere where you can close the door for Pete's sake and make sure they have learned enough manners to know to knock before entering. It isn't like you're watching 5 seasons of Caligula.

I think teens can handle Oz, depending on their maturity, but I wouldn't watch it with little kids wandering around. Great show!

Haha, I started watching Oz right away (mainly for Ernie Hudson since I'm a Ghostbusters nut) when it first started, I think I was 11. Stuff like that was pretty crazy but it didn't bother me.
It's a very adult show. I revisited it not too long ago, and it holds up incredible well. My favorite HBO show I think. It's gritty, it's real, and it sucks you in.
There was one ep that's even still burned in to my mind..

I've been interested in starting this show a couple times. Everyone raves about it. But when I netflixed it a few years ago I just wasn't into it after two episodes. Should I give it another try?

I loved Oz. It is very violent from the the beginning. The full frontal stuff really starts more in the 4th season.

You should spoilerize that Norm, if Chuck is planning on watching the show.
I only watched the first season. I really liked the characters. Very well written and much better prison drama than Prison Break.

Yeah our living room is open. The kids sometimes wander through on their way to the kitchen and it's right when someone's talking about butt sex or women are making out or there's some conversation about poo. No matter how normal the show is that we're watching, they always hear or see the worst snippet and are totally grossed out and think we're freaks.

And that's what teenage girls ALWAYS think about their parents. That's going to pretty happen regardless of what you watch, read, say or do when they're that age... so watch your OZ.

Give it another chance and stay with it this time. It's worth it. When I watched the show for the first time, I kept thinking, "The name of this show should be The Anal Rape Show." I turned it off, but eventually came back to it because the rest of the stuff was great drama. It's one of the best shows HBO has ever aired.
