Big Love #30 : "Come, Ye Saints" 2/22/09

This is supposed to be a biggie, if the preview is to be believed. If you're watching the Oscars, don't forget to tape/DVR it.

Spoiler:
Rated TVMA: ADULT LANGUAGE, ADULT CONTENT, BRIEF NUDITY

Running Time: 54 minutes

Genre: Drama

The Henricksons embark on a 2,500-mile road-trip pilgrimage to a Joseph Smith shrine in Cumorah, NY, where Bill intends to bury a family time capsule in the sacred earth. Along the way, a series of jarring revelations test the limits of their family bonds--and Bill's faith. (TVMA) (AC,AL)

Full recap of episode #29 "For Better Or Worse"
Spoiler:

Written by Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa
Directed by Julie Anne Robinson

The newly blonde Margene illustrates for Bill, Don and Jerry the "Mormon twist" for their new business venture - buses with hostesses to take people to the casino. Don reports the loan application is before the bank, and when that's approved, all they need is the green light from the Federal gaming commission. Jerry is pleased.

At bowling night, Nicki and Barb wonder why Ana hasn't accepted the proposal yet. Bill gets a call from Joey reporting that Roman has moved to a nearby motel with his wives since he's forbidden from returning to the compound for six more months. Ana accepts the proposal and is taken aback when Bill and the wives schedule the marriage for 3:30 that afternoon. At the ceremony in the backyard, the family looks on as Bill and Ana are sealed. Bill has to run off to work afterwards and Barb announces that she and Bill and Ana discussed it and Bill decided Ana will be living with Barb until they can work out something more permanent. Margene and Nicki are displeased but Barb insists it was Bill's decision.

Bill goes to see Ted, who's changed his mind and set up a meeting with his associate who can bury the anti-gaming bills. The legislator agrees to bury the bills for now. It turns out Ted needs something from Bill: Alby Grant is selling certain church documents and pulled out of a deal to sell something to a friend of Ted's. He wants Bill to use his influence to make Alby sell. Bill is displeased about how he was manipulated but agrees to help.

Ben and Franky talk Sarah and Heather into coming with them on a road trip to the compound. Donna joins them, along with one of the compound girls from the Butt Hutt, who calls Sarah wicked for not supporting Roman Grant. Hanging out on the grounds of Juniper Creek, Sarah tells Heather that her father took a fourth wife and admits to her friend that she wants to keep her baby. They plot how they could go to Arizona together and Heather could help with the baby. Franky learns that his father sent his mother Nita away for whacking him with a shovel. Franky takes off, and Ben chases after him. At Frank's house, Franky demands to know where his mother is, but Frank wants to know from Ben where Lois is. Franky punches his father and Frank runs the boys off his property. Meanwhile, the rest of the group is spotted by Alby's God squad. They flee.

Ana attends her first daily wives meeting, disturbed to hear that Barb "assigns" their duties. Margene pressures Ana to live with her instead of Barb.

Bill calls Joey who's back on the compound, and reports that he's got Lois set up at one of Don's apartments. Joey reports that Alby's turned the compound into a police state - with curfews and a police force, and not letting any outsiders on the compound. He tells Bill about the pow-wow Roman's called. Alby and Nicki have both been summoned. At his meeting, Roman threatens to reveal that Alby and one of his wives tried to kill him, but Alby counters with his own threat - disclosing that Adaleen tried to have him killed. Adaleen points out that the location of the alleged incident isn't information Alby wants known. Alby has to agree to not openly defy Roman. Next, Roman threatens to tell Bill how Nicki helped him during his trial; she, too, must fall in line.

Barb tells Ana she feels like she has a true friend now - Nicki and Margene are more sisters than friends. Ana admits that Margene asked her to live with her but says she'd rather stay with Barb, who insists they have to let Bill handle it.

When Bill spots Nicki at Roman's motel meeting, she insists she's only there to protect their family. Bill confronts Alby about the documents he's selling. He says he's been collecting them from the faithful and selling them to replenish the compound. Bill asks Alby to reconsider the sale to Ted's colleague, suggesting he can get Alby a better offer.

Bill calls a meeting with all of the wives to give his verdict on the living situation: He's decided Ana should live with Nicki since they know each other the least. He leaves, having managed to upset all of them with this news. On moving day, Nicki offers Ana a drawer and a nook. Barb and Margene run to Bill, insisting he's making a huge mistake making Ana live with Nicki. Ana demands her own house. When she offers to help with a down payment, Bill informs her she should be putting all of her money into the communal pot. She blows up, refusing to pool her earnings.

Ray sees Nicki packing her things and is surprised she's quitting. She blames family problems. They're both sorry she's leaving. Later, Nicki gets a phone message from Ray, saying he misses her and asking her to come back. Ana shows up and takes Nicki on a "bonding" bowling date. They get drunk and Ana confides she thinks Barb is lonely. Later, tipsy, Nicki leaves a message for Ray saying she does want to come back to work.

Franky comes to Ben before dawn to tell him he's going to Nicaragua to find his mother - he got a lead from Jodean.

The bank denies Bill and Don's loan. Meanwhile, Barb gets tipped off that Ted didn't really have the anti-gaming bills killed and Bill races to Ted to confront him. He tells Ted the price of Alby's document has gone up: Ted has to make sure the bills are stopped and his loan is approved.

When Barb refuses Margene's offer to move in with her and give Ana her house for a while, Margie's feelings are hurt. Later, Nicki and Margie watch Barb and Ana having fun. Nicki turns Margie against Barb, and gets her to help rip up the newly planted flowers in the yard to make a statement. Barb runs out to stop them and the three of them argue over Ana. Barb admits she wants Ana as a friend because she makes her feel normal, "like choosing this life wasn't a mistake." When Bill and Ana overhear the fight, he begs Ana to go away with him on a honeymoon. But Ana tells them all she can't stay in the marriage. She asks for a divorce.

Guest Starring:
Robert Beltran as Jerry Flute
Charles Esten as Ray Henry
Patrick Fabian as Ted
Mark L. Young as Franky

Re: Big Love #30 : "Come, Ye Saints" 2/22/09

We finally get to see how the family functions without any interaction with extended family, business interests, or political enemies.

This episode felt like a mid-season wrap-up, as we got closure (or at least reminders) on multiple strands dating back to the very first episode of the series. Ben-Margie, Bill's Viagra, Nicki's birth control, Margie's mother, and Sarah's pregnancy all within one great episode. Goodwin was particularly great tonight, especially in the

scenes.

What a conclusion. The final ten minutes were the best I've seen from a television series in a very long time. Poor Sarah. When Sarah cries, grrr cries.

Yeah Sarah pulled at the heart strings this week. From her giddiness (she was so unbelievably cute in that scene) at the idea of spending time alone with her father to her losing the baby.

Bill beginning to lose his faith was was good as well.

I really enjoyed this episode because it was all about what I do like about this show: the family and how they relate to each other.

I really don't like this show when it focuses on all the weirdos on the compound, so this was episode was a huge breath of fresh air for me. I have felt like this season has been too much of the compound politics already.

Another classic episode. Really wonderful acting all around and very touching.

"Am I being a pill?"

Holy shit! It was Mac from Night Court!
Yeah, that was a little unfortunate casting, especially so soon off the 30 Rock appearance. At first, I thought he was appearing as himself for the talent show. They should have put someone less recognisable in that part. Does this mean that Tracy Morgan will play that role in the Big Love movie?

I haven't seen this ep yet but I kinda agree. I'm tired of Bill's back and forth between Roman and Albi. That said, I say "kinda agree" because while I don't care for Bill's back and forth stuff and his screwing around with Compound Politics, I still enjoy the Compound's main characters.

I love this show. What a great episode.

at Margene getting Bill started for Nikki.

Great to see Mac from Night Court, even if he was playing a Baptist.

Seriously, if you had a wife like Margene you wouldn't need any others. What a great character.

What's endearing about this show is that this family loves each other. Say what you will about their beliefs, and how "odd" they may be, this family is there when they are in dire straights. They find out their daughter had a miscarriage, which means she was having unprotected sex without being married, and their first thought is to comfort her. They didn't say "how could you do this to me," but instead realized that she was in pain and needed them. What a great scene. Even Nikki was fantastic and stepped up to help Sarah.

Great episode.

How many episodes until Ben is banging Margene? I give it 6.

If that happens I would be very disappointed with the writers. Margene is nothing if not devoted to Bill and to this family. I truly believe she doesn't see Ben as anything but a son.

I agree as well...and I think they kind of showed us that when she was bitching him out. Usually when she's complaining or trying to give orders, she kind of does it in an immature way where you wouldn't be able to take her too seriously. This time she was straight faced and really attempting to put Ben in his place.

Another fantastic episode. So Sarah did lose the baby?

I read about it in the book Under The Banner of Heaven. It's a huge show that Mormons come from all over to see every summer. Tens of thousands decend on this small town to see the show. I forgot where it was or what the show was called.

edit: It's called "Spectacle at Hill Cumorah" in Palmyra, N.Y.
It must be a zoo when they all descend on that place.

Re: Big Love #30 : "Come, Ye Saints" 2/22/09

Fantastic episode & a well-timed & needed change of pace from the compound/casino/Anna/neighborhood storylines. Good decision of the producers to take a break from the battles on the home front.

Agree that this was a pivotal episode in bringing many family secrets out in the open (at least to parts of the family). Also agree that there's almost zero chance of Margie hooking up with Ben...the writers have avoided these typical soap-opera shenanigans so far, and kudos for giving Margie the opportunity to assert herself in an appropriate way (a sign that Margie is maturing). The jury's still out for Nikki's flirtation...although I expect that Nikki will flee if things get too serious.

A lesser show would have had Bill turn around & see the "angel" floating above him & have him see it as an omen. Here it was just ironic.

What a touching ending. Notice how there was no music over the end credits? I thought that showed incredible taste & empathy on the part of the producers. It's amazing how they have taken a fringe group (by the way, that was a very realistic confrontation between the preacher & Bill) and made them characters that the audience can care about even if the audience finds their beliefs to be odd/misguided.

exactly... What another great episode. The key to the greatness of the show is the family, especially when all 3 wives are interacting. The compound stuff is decent but pales when compared to Margene, Barb, and Nicki being on the screen.

I was thinking the same thing while watching this episode.

And wow, those scenes with Sarah were heartbreaking, but with a positive resolution.

Re: Big Love #30 : "Come, Ye Saints" 2/22/09

This was such a great episode. Bill questioning his faith with the angel rising and the light behind him was great. Besides that, he was "looking for God's presence" throughout the trip, when He was everywhere. Nearly everything that happened can have the connotation of God intervening to clear the family of all their potentially dangerous secrets, so the family can move forward without the burden of them.

Nearly every character's flaws or secrets were exposed to the family, only to have the exposure of the ultimate secret (the pregnancy) bring them all back together.

Bill's pills, Margie's mom, Nikki's flirtation, Ben's infatuation, Bill's religious pompousness, Nikki's selfishness, and Margie's immaturity all were wiped clean (though I suppose Nikki's flirtation could come back up). Nikki's selfishness has always been an issue on the show, and yet it is she who is with Sara during the miscarriage and who volunteers to tell the others what happened. Similarly, Margie has always been playful and flirtatious, all the way up to the scene in the motel with Nikki and Bill, but when she is confronted with the repercussions of that with the letter from Ben, we see her step up and be the mother figure she needs to be.

Bill wanted his family to have an epic religious experience, which they did, but because it was an apparent religious intervention, Bill doesn't see it.

I'm not remotely religious myself, but I felt this way about this episode right away.

Maybe "wiped clean" is the wrong phrase, but all these issues were brought to light, so they could be dealt with. Certainly there needs to be some source of conflict within the family, or it would be a pretty boring (and unrealistic) show, but I feel these events were brought into the open in this episode as examples of God's intervention in their lives.

Re: Big Love #30 : "Come, Ye Saints" 2/22/09

I know as a plot device and character development we had to see Margie finally act as an adult and get that angry but to me it seemed somewhat hypocritical. I'm glad that she finally confronted the situation since she pretty much had too, but can't you really blame Ben. I mean seeing her naked wasn't the first weird situation they were put in(by the way was that really Ginny hiney we saw, i'm guessing it was a stand in). Haven't we seen them wrestle around in the house and by the pool(and come on what 16 yr old wouldn't fall in love with her after wrestling with her in a bikini). It seemed at one time even Barbara seemed uncomfortable about their actions toward one another. Again, i get why she had to assert herself at that specific time with that occurrence but she kinda put at least a little fuel on Ben's infatuation fire.
I agree with everyone though i honestly think the writers are too good to touch the two of them actually having an affair. So far the actions between the two are somewhat realistic, and with the loyalty that Margie has for Bill and the family I really think it would go against her character to do something like that.
I don't think most shows could pull off an episode like that, wrapping up loose ends or setting up future plot points(i know Smallville can never do it without the episode sucking) but to me it was one of the best episodes of the series.
