did Kiss steal a riff from Shaun Cassidy? (lol)

earlier, I had the 70's channel on the Insight Music service on and "Hey Deanie" by Shaun Cassidy came on. As soon as I heard the opening guitar riff, I immediately thought of "Let's Put The X In Sex".

Anyone else hear it?

Please don't put "lol" in a thread title.

Ever.

well, Shaun Cassidy isn't exactly someone respected for being a rocker and was basically nothing more than the Zac Efron of his day, so KISS having a riff that sounds a lot like one of his hits is kinda LOL-worthy.

A couple thoughts...

1. This is the period where Paul Stanley started to surrender his songwriting duties to his songwriting partners (where just a couple years earlier HE would come in with the riffs and basic vocal melodies, at this point he let the co-writer bring in partially written songs and Paul would polish it up and make it sound more KISS-like).

2. That's a pretty basic type of riff that probably has been done before. The songs themselves are very different.

3. Those riffs ARE amazingly similar, but the fact that they are about 10-12 years apart would mean, to me, that it's a coincidence more than anything.

It is pretty funny, though. Of course, Shaun Cassidy didn't write the song, Eric Carmen of the Raspberries (a band Paul has always liked) wrote it (and recorded it himself as well), so who knows?

(The opening riff of "Deuce" was something Paul came up with after listening to a Raspberries song - and an intentional tip of the hat.)
