Devin Faraci of CHUD essentially summed it up as this year's Little Miss Sunshine/Juno, another quirk-tastic Oscar-baiter from the new Miramax, Fox Searchlight. While I really like both Gordon-Levitt and especially Zooey Deschanel (damn you Ben Gibbard), I definitely feel like, having watched the trailer, that this movie could go that way for me too.

I like those actors, so I hope its good. The voice over sounds like something they'd do in a 1970's movie trailer.

New trailer is up at /Film. The opening sequence had me wincing - sure, all pretty girls in office elevators love The Smiths. I hope Zooey's character is more than just another idealized exercise in hipster wish-fulfillment.

Looks a lot less quirky than before. Still not great, I'd only ever expect it to be alright, but the actors shine a lot more in this newer version.

Joseph Gordon-Levitt is possibly the best young actor out there, and after seeing his powerhouse performances in Mysterious Skin and Lookout I'll watch anything he chooses to do.

It'll be interesting to see how he performs as Cobra Commander in the upcoming G.I. Joe flick.

Saw it earlier tonight in a packed house. So packed I stood in the aisle for the entire movie and still liked it. It's a weird film, because it's a romantic-comedy from the man's point of view, so it's hobbled due to the genre not appealing to most males. A lot of it felt brutally biographical to me (i.e. I related to it), but it had a little more beyond that: there were several moments that were as weirdly hilarious as any moment in a good Will Ferrell film. It's a romantic-comedy, like The Breakup, that you (a man) will not mind seeing.
It's still light and airy even as it tries to deliver a deep message but it is thoroughly engaging and the leads do a good job of delivering the script, even if Deschanel seems to be handling stuff slightly above her ability at times.
It doesn't capture 20-something angst the way Garden State does and it's not as good of a mix of hilarity and heartfelt sentiment like Knocked Up but it's pretty damn good. If you need to appease your significant other by seeing a "girl movie", make it this one. You'll enjoy it.

I just saw it at the Atlanta Film Festival and loved it!
Now, I went in with zero expectations. I hadn't seen a trailer or read anything at all about the film beforehand. So it had nothing to live up to in my mind. And then the movie clicked on all cylinders for me. I would describe it as like a cross between Annie Hall and Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (I'm a big fan of both). I like that it showed both the sweet side and the sour side of a relationship, yet ordered it so that it all seemed real without ever losing the humor (always a risk when a comedy tries to get real). And seeing it with a great audience that was laughing all the way through added a lot to the experience.
If this isn't a word-of-mouth hit when it's released, I'll be shocked!

Just saw it tonight, and I have to be honest, it's a wonderful and honest film. Yes, there are a lot of laugh-out-loud moments to be had throughout, but the film is also a story of hope. It's so easily relatable that you absolutely feel like you have experienced it in real life before hand.
The performances by Joseph Gordon-Levitt and Zooey Deschanal are extraordinary, the cinematography and editing are both terrific, and the final 10 minutes are pitch perfect.
Also, contrary to what some people are saying, it is not as quirky as it looks. While the setup and the jumping around the relationship concept are a little quirky, this was a film that rang true with each passing moment, which put it almost in a class by itself. It's a possible Oscar contender, but I think it's a little too early to call it a lock at this point.
Still, it just might be the best film I've seen so far this year, even though I haven't fully made up my mind about it yet. However, the experience of seeing the film is still with me, so it's succeeding in that regard.

I saw it a few weeks ago and think it was easily the best movie of 2009 so far. It is funny, honest and very creative. The style alone is pretty exciting throughout and never overpowers the story, but works to enhance the tone...sometimes I think films like this try too hard to be original and offbeat, but this one rang true and had moments that were really fun and heartbreaking in equal measure. Definitely one to seek out.

The latest trailer I saw makes it look a lot less like Juno or Little Miss Sunshine, and now I'm actually interested in seeing it. Mostly for Zooey.

I am fucking in agony waiting for this movie to open. I watch the trailer 2, 3 times a day. I bought the soundtrack. Yes, I need help.
