Fox renews "'Til Death" for a Fourth Season...
Shocked. Fox aired 7 episodes of the third seasons and bumped it off the network...only to bring it back for a Foruth season of 22 episodes!
Fox has given a 22-episode order for the Brad Garrett-Joely Fisher starrer, which will return next season.
Series has been off the air since early October, and there was speculation that Fox might shelve the show’s remaining third-season episodes.
Instead, insiders said producer Sony Pictures TV gave the network a deal it couldn’t refuse to bring the laffer back for a fourth year.
Pact will bring the “‘Til Death” episode total up to more than 80 -- close enough for an off-network syndication sale.
Fox has aired just seven episodes of “‘Til Death” this season, which means the net still has 15 from season three to air. Add that to next season’s 22 episode order, and Fox has plenty of “‘Til Death” in its future.
Net still hasn’t scheduled this season’s remaining segs; its sked is already jam-packed with “American Idol,” the return of “24” and newbies “Lie to Me” and “Dollhouse.”
But the sitcom could very well return later this season with back-to-back originals.
“‘Til Death” underwent a creative shift this year, moving its focus to the friendship between Garrett and new cast member J.B. Smoove. The show’s next door neighbors, played by Eddie Kaye Thomas and Kat Foster, were dropped.
This season, “‘Til Death” averaged a 1.8 rating/5 share among adults 18-49, as well as 4.7 million viewers, in the 9 p.m. slot, and a 1.4/4 (and 3.7 million viewers) in the 9:30 slot, which it briefly filled after the cancellation of “Do Not Disturb.”
“‘Til Death” is exec produced by Josh Goldsmith, Cathy Yuspa, Tim Hobert, Steve Skrovan, David Rosenthal and Garrett.

It's one of those cheap(er) to produce shows that probably does okay on DVD and will likely do well in syndication. And thats where the real money is, syndication.

How many episodes does a show need for the big money in syndication? Assuming 22 episode full seasons for 1 and 2, after the fourth they will only have 73 epsidoes. I thought the total was over 100 or so needed. If thats the case, they need yet another season after the fourth.

I actually liked the show until they gutted it this season. It has been awful up until this point. Very surprising that it will come back for the rest of the third season much less a 4th season.

I didn't even know this show was still on, nor did I know that it was even released on DVD. Is it any good?

But the show is produced by Sony. So unless the renewal includes part-ownership of the show for 20th Century FOX, FOX won't see any money from syndication or DVDs. That's why i was surprised when I read they renewed it.

It just doesn't work here though. I see that they were trying to plug in "Leon" to the show but they completely changed the point of the show. It was supposed to be about the differences between a young married couple and a long time married couple.

They can't manage all the characters. They tried at the end of last season when they first added Smoove but the Woodcocks were hardly seen after that point.

Yeah...but look at it from Fox's viewpoint. They got a sweet deal to bring 22 new episodes (along with 15 or so already in the can) of a show that gets 'eh' ratings that could fill schedule space if one of their shows fails or they cancel it (Won't be long for Dollhouse... ). Summertime, after Idol, during the typical 're-run weeks' etc. Sony then gets the ability to syndicate the show since it would have passed the magic number a show needs. This show makes a perfect pairing with Everybody Loves Raymond, Seinfeld, Friends etc.
