Nice list. I agree with #1. I still get a thrill seeing that shot. The "Body Snatchers" shot has always given me the creeps.

I guess my only "gripe" would be the missing Japanese monster movie shots. But I guess some of those might register in the Top 100 list.

I'm glad it's 80's heavy because the model work then is better than a lot of the CGI now. Apparently there were no good special effects in the 1940s.

I'm really surprised that Terminator 2 was not mentioned on the list. I always thought the shot of the T-1000 leaving the flaming wreck as he transforms to his police outfit was state of the art for it's time.

Not a single shot from Terminator 2 or The Matrix.

Fun to go through the list. There's also a link to the 24 worst shots of all-time, for anyone who is interested.

Their reasoning for not including Bullet Time is bogus, as is their exclusion of effects from The Thing, American Werewolf in London, and any of the Lord of the Rings films.

The shot of the stomach chomping from The Thing deserved to be on this list.

I can understand why some of the shots mentioned weren't included. I imagine the shots from Terminator 2 were ignored because of the transition element in question -- it looks great when it's metallic silver, and of course it looks like Robert Patrick when it's Robert Patrick,, but the part where it transitions from one to the other is generally spotty. Since the tech was rudimentary, it never really fades very well from one to the other, it just sort of wipes.

Yeah now that I think about movies that are missing, I'm less impressed with this list. T2, Alien, Matrix, LOTR, Titanic.
Diary of the Dead and Cloverfield weren't too impressive to me.

Yep, and shots from T2 and Titanic are on that list.

The same shot from Dune is on both lists.

I think it's fine, people get too upset about lists.

Yeah, but I think in this case there are some obvious ones missing, even if they did try and clarify the omission of The Matrix. I mean, does anyone really think Terminator 3 was more impressive effects wise then Terminator 2?

Spielberg's War of the Worlds is on the list but not Pal's? Nor Pal's Time Machine?

And the thing from Frenzy, which is just a match-cut from the stage to location? That shouldn't even counts as a special effect.

Wasn't T3 more impressive than T2? T2 was certainly years ahead of its time, but T3 is certainly more impressive...

...right?

But it's just about specific moments, not overall effects. And, of course, when you are looking at moments, that means you are grabbing from such a huge pool that you will miss some that other people love. The list didn't seem that bad to me, but he could have put 50 different ones on there and I probably would have still thought it was fine

Well comparing them directly sure, but in the context of the time I don't think anything in T3 was particularly special or stood out, versus T2 which was pretty amazing at the time.

Yeah, but like someone said above you can point out specifics like the T-1000 first walking out of the fire from the truck explosion with the reflections and everything. You're right that there's a huge pool and a lot of cool scenes over the years, but I think to not credit a specific thing is surprising to me. And surely better then things like say, the Fifth Element scene. The list isn't bad or anything, just surprised of some obvious omissions.

Same here. I had never even heard of it. Apparently it's been on the Fox Movie Channel a couple of times. There is a copy of the film floating around online, but we're not allowed to discuss such things....

Good list but you should have added "videos included" in your thread title.
