Disrespected films that don't deserve so much hate?

There are some films that have gotten so much hate, but as bad as they may be, they certainly don't deserve so much hate or negative attention. If anything, these films are basically just "fair films" that have gotten massive amounts of hatred due to bloated production costs, high expectations, or the fame around their directors. (I still don't understand why people's expectations think an expensive movie is going to be better than a cheaper film).

- Gangs of New York
- Matrix Reloaded/Revolutions
- Quantom of Solace
- Waterworld
- Dick Tracy
- Hook
- Heaven's Gate
- Blair Witch Project
- Superman Returns
- Star Wars prequels
- The Golden Compass
- Eragon

There is no way that I can put Pearl Harbor or 10,000,000 BC on that list!...and I wonder where Battlefield Earth stands now (I thought it wasn't that bad when I saw it once in the theater).

Can anyone think of any more of these types of films?

MatrixRevolutions
Quantum of Solace
The Golden Compass :

ALL deserve the HATE they get cause they are terrible.

Gigli is a movie that does not deserve the hate it gets mostly by people who havn't even seen it. Despite a terrible performance by Lopez its actually a good involving film.

'Heaven's Gate' was a victim of studio meddling. The actual director's cut of that film is quite long, and good.

'Gangs Of New York' is a good film, not great I guess, but a rather unique period piece.

I guess I would add 'Levity' as one that was pretty well panned all around, but I really liked it and found it a superior film.

I agree with the Matrix sequels. Obviously not as good as the first, but I enjoyed them. I don't think Quantum deserves the hate either.

I don't think the Shrek movies (well, the first two) deserve the hate either.

I don't think the 3rd Shrek deserves the hate it gets because I think it was better than the 2nd one, which was the pits for the franchise (IMO).

A lot of people rag on Pearl Harbor but I don't think it out and out sucks.

Titanic - every time this movie comes up there are people hate this film with a passion. Most of whom are also quick to 'brag' that they've never seen it.

I just don't get it. Sure there's the whole love story angle, which is what most people dislike about it, but it's otherwise a competent film with some pretty good set pieces. I don't think it would be nearly as disrespected today if it wasn't so massively successful. And that Celine Dion song didn't help much either.

I disagree. Gangs of New York IS a great film.

I didn't think so the first time I watched it, but when I watched it again with different expectations I accepted it for what it was rather than what I wanted it to be, and I came away with a much greater appreciation for the movie. I would definitely put this on my All Time Top 50 List.

I love Titanic. Yeah, the love story angle comes across a little strong, but all the other stuff is just amazing to watch. James Cameron's attention to detail with this one was Kurosawa-esque. Titanic just flies by - a sign of a good movie.

- Gangs of New York was a solid movie, but a standard revenge storyline and weak, weak romanctic subplot made it a disappointment. It was a good movie, but it was not a good Scorsese movie.

-Reloaded/Revolutions were too high on their philosophical mumbo-jumbo. The original was provocative without being talky, the first sequel was just textbook bs with some good action, and the third one pretty much ditched the phisophy to be a full-blown war movie.

-Quantum of Solace was the sequel to Casino Royale, so it was either going to be great or a disappointment. Because it wasn't great, it was a disappointment. 106 minutes of Bond knocking off Bourne.

-Waterworld is friggin' fun. It was a perfect summer blockbuster.

-I could have sworn that Dick Tracy was well-received, as well it should be. Beatty somehow made the movie faithful to the comics, AND it was entertaining. The problem might have been the timing, which could have been a little too close to Batman for its own good.

-Hook was great when I was eight, then I grew up and realized how cloying and fake it really was.

-Heaven's Gate has no substance. It's big, it's beautiful, it's empty.

-Blair Witch Project was a gimmick pretending to be a movie.

-Superman Returns did a good job at covering the serious side of Superman. Too bad it forgot to be fun.

-The Phantom Menace is so-so even ten years later, Attack of the Clones has a lot of good stuff, and Revenge of the Sith is up there with Empire. Yeah, I said it.

-Only watched the first 15 minutes of The Golden Compass.

-Eragon was a shameless rip-off of Star Wars, Harry Potter, and every single dragon/fantasy epic we've ever seen. Awful, awful movie.

Here are a few of mine:

-Alien vs. Predator - Fast-paced, claustrophobic, and fun.
-Daredevil - Very under-rated superhero movie.
-End of Days - Arnold vs. The Devil, and Arnold acts, too. Action-packed, creepy, and very powerful.
-Ghostbusters II - Almost as good as the original; funny, witty, great f/x, and a nice message.
-Hannibal - epic, disgusting, hyper-stylized sequel. I could understand why people hate it, but it is worth defending.
-Kingdom of Heaven - Even the theatrical version is sweeping, I was shocked that it bombed.

I saw Titanic when it first came out in theaters. I didn't really enjoy it. Over the years I have seen it probably one or two more times and have disliked it even more. I think the love story is over-done and I think a lot of the acting is just off somehow, although I can't quite put my finger on it. And this is coming from someone who likes Winslet a lot and has been very impressed with DiCaprio on the whole. I don't think it is their fault either, I think a lot of the dialogue is just over-the-top/unnecessarily dramatic and never convinced me. I did, however, enjoy the scenes with the band staying and playing and the Captain at the wheel as the water came rushing in. I thought those were the best scenes in the movie and if it is on TV anymore I will often flip back to see those parts, but other than that I try to avoid the movie in its entirety. I can see why some people like it, but for me I just never enjoyed it that much despite giving it several tries.

On another note, I think Tommy Boy receives a lot of unnecessary hate. I read Ebert's review of it and it seems as though he went into that film completely unaware of the type of film it was going to be. It's one of my favourite movies in the childish comedy genre.

I also agree with The Matrix Sequels. I think the first one was amazing, but also thoroughly enjoyed the second and third movies as well.

I think Terminator 3 gets a lot of hate as well, at least from my friends. I knew it wasn't going to be as good as the first two, but I thought it had a good story, some good acting, and was nice to see some more progression with Connor.

And I don't know if it gets a lot of hate or not, but I think Joe Dirt is just downright hilarious. I imagine it does get a lot of hate though, but I can't help but continually laugh whenever I watch it.

I disagree with the Matrix sequels and Superman Returns. I love Revolutions (Reloaded could've been better) and Superman Returns was great and it's sad Singer will probably not be returning for another Supes flick.

I will still argue that The Phantom Menace is the best of the prequel trilogy, if only for Duel of the Fates. The only portion of the prequel trilogy that I can remember on a positive note looking back now.

I'll second Terminator 3. While it's not the great piece of cinema that the first two are, it's a goddamn down right piece of fun. It's literally 90-minutes of action with very few breaks and a pretty bleak ending.

? These are all respectable art-house films with a lot of love, except maybe for Brown Bunny and 29 Palms...You should add Ken Park to your list (which was a truly awful film)

A good point with your list as well:
- Alien vs. Predator is not the type of genre film that gets good reviews, just like the first one - it was entertaining and thrilling. I never understand horror movie critics that give such low scores to the films. Sure, they all aren't like The Shining or Event Horizon, but most horror movies are pretty good at what they are supposed to do.
- Daredevil - I totally forgot about this one. I love the theatrical and the director's cut of this film. The film gets hate all because of Ben Afleck. Daredevil fans should be lucky that it was directed by a real director instead of Frank Miller (who has supposedly just ruined Eisner's The Spirit).
End of Days - the one Arnold film where he actually acts and tries to speak without his German accent.
Kingdom of Heaven - the theatrical cut was just a fair forgettable flick, but the director's cut IS a masterpiece.

I think many hate the film because they have to wait sooooo long for them to die lol I mean sink the damn thing already! Which is what the movie is all about, the ship sinking.

I think Steve Harvey said it best in Kings of Comedy "Hurry up and drown their ass!" lol

I agree with some of the ones mentioned, and I'll add one of my own.

Moonraker

Is it a great movie? No, of course not. It does have some pretty good action set pieces though, and I've never understood how people can love The Spy Who Loved Me but hate Moonraker. It's pretty much a direct sequel in tone to SWLM. To me the entertainment value alone puts it lower middle of the pack for the Bond films.

Another Michael Bay - The Island. It's actually a very good film. Has action. Drama. Comedy. An interesting story. Scarlett looking her hottest as a blonde.

Did extremely well overseas. What happened in the U.S.?

I'll second The Punisher. I kind of liked that movie. (The Island as well).
