as much as I enjoyed Tropic Thunder, I felt that the HFP totally wasted a nomination on Tom Cruise! Same feeling with James Franco's nomination, really surprised he didn't get nominated for Milk.

Heath Ledger's rightly deserved, but sad that Dark Knight didn't get love anywhere else.

How the fuck did Jenny Lumet not get a nom for Screenplay? Kaufman I can understand because Synecdoche threw a lot of people, but Lumet put out the best script this year, adapted or otherwise.

Although it is awesome to see that Downey got a nom for supporting actor.

Surprised to see Dark Knight not on the list of nominees for Best Picture.

Happy to see In Bruges made the cut for Best Picture - Comdey/Musical, although I highly doubt it will make it to the Oscars.

I haven't seen Pineapple Express but I'm surprised James Franco got a nod for best actor - comedy.

Good to see RDJ get a nod for Tropic Thunder but its Heath Ledger's award IMO.

Hopefully the Academy shows more respect than the HFP towards The Dark Knight. While I don't think it's in the top 5 of all-time like some IMDB voters, it's an amazing achievement, a box office juggernaut, and one of the most critically acclaimed films of the year. ONLY ONE FREAKING NOMINATION?!

If the Oscars diss TDK, then look for an all-time low in ratings because no one gives a rat's ass about any of these other movies.

That said, if any other director has me rooting for him besides Chris Nolan, it's David Fincher. So that would be small consolation.

Thrilled to see In Bruges nominations. All are deserving IMO. Surprised but happy to see James Franco and Tom Cruise's nods. Robert Downey Jr. surely deserved his, along with Ledger, no surprise there. Revolutionary Road has been doing a good job of flying under the radar so far, so now my expectations are significantly elevated for that one.

I'm loving the anger against the lack of TDK nominations. I'm sorry that Ledger died, but sorry fanboys -- that still doesn't make it THE GREATEST MOVIE OF ALL TIME.

The TDK snub pisses me off, but Nolan stands no chance of winning. Really, at this point only Fincher and Boyle are in competition for it. But they should have at least given Nolan a nod over Ron fucking Howard. Granted, I've not seen Frost/Nixon, but I have never seen Ron Howard do anything remotely impressive with a camera. He plays it safe and people reward him for it, and it drives me mad.

It doesn't have to be the greatest movie of all-time. It's one of the best movies of 2008 which should be more than enough to earn it a Best Picture nod. And how in the hell could it not get a Best Director nomination?!


I think Ron Howard has shown he's very skilled with getting great performances from his actors. Say what you will about A Beautiful Mind and whether it deserved Best Picture, but the performances were outstanding. And while he was blessed with a terrific cast in a movie like Parenthood, he deserves at least some of the credit for the outcome.

Agreed on Howard. He usually isn't visually inventive but is a good actor director, and keeps the story moving.

Nolan's direction in Dark Knight was fine but I will agree with some other complaints, you never get the chance to really feel anything for the characters. Yeah, a few scenes are a bit shocking, but it's all from relationships established in Batman Begins. It just feels a little emotionally inert overall.

With that said, I think TDK resonates with folks in the US a little more than it might elsewhere due to our current mindset with economy, terrorism, and politics. But I haven't been overseas in a while, so I could be wrong.

Yeah, all the film nominations for both Drama and Musical/Comedy seems to be pretty spot-on. Burn After Reading and In Bruges!

No matter how much I enjoyed The Dark Knight as a life-long Batman fan, a) that sonar sequence, and b) the fact that it's a comic book film will keep it out of the running for best film of the year. I hope it snags an Oscar nomination just for the hell of it, but I'm not expecting anything of the sort.

I guess Mamma Mia got picked just because they needed a musical, even though it sucked. I wish they had swapped it out with Zack and Miri or Forgetting Sarah Marshall, which were actually enjoyable. Shit, Role Models would have been a better choice than Mamma Mia.

I noticed that the Globes snubbed both The Dark Knight and Lost in the TV division. Both were top productions in 2008, with great acting, directing and overall greatness. It's sad that because they are popular, the powers that be are turning their backs on these two.

Never thought Mickey Rourke would be back in the game. I thought his career would be a long series of bad B movies to the end. Although he's hard to look at these days, I'm happy to see him making a comeback. I may have to check out the Wrestler.
