Screamers: The Hunting (sequel to 1996 movie) on DVD 2-17-09

I know a lot of people highly regard the original Peter Weller film Screamers and I just have seen Sony has made a new direct-to-dvd sequel which was kinda surprising.
Release date is Feb. 17th 2009.

Plot synopsis:
"It's been thirteen years since the robotic killing machines known as Screamers destroyed the human population of Sirius 6B. But now a distress signal brings a team of rescuers to the supposedly abandoned planet. Can it be a long-lost colony of human survivors? Or have the Screamers evolved into something even more sinister...a half-man/half-machine hybrid that needs to escape Sirius 6B to finish its mission: the complete annihilation of the human race? Based on a short story by the visionary creator of Blade Runner, Total Recall and Minority Report, Screamers: The Hunting is a mind-shattering sequel to Philip K. Dick's legendary sci-fi cult thriller!"

Hmmm, that was out of left field. I'll give it a rent I suppose.

And the award for least-expected, or anticipated, sequel goes to...

Any chance Sony will re-release Screamers in widescreen?
(AIUI, it was one of the titles Columbia/Sony originally released it as a widescreen/fullscreen flipper, and then quietly removed the widescreen version from the DVD)

I recall seeing the original at a local $1 theatre -- I'll check out the sequel eventually...

Here's the trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YDgwuv3qZ9E

It doesn't look that bad, especially if it came out in the mid-90s....

Loved the original. I'll check out the sequel, although I never imagined there'd be one.

They definitely have a widescreen master handy -- it's aired in high-def on HDNet Movies -- so I guess it's just a matter of them doing something with it.
