I just noticed that Amazon's Save $100 when you purchase a blu-ray player + 4 blu-ray deal from Amazon has just been updated to include some new models of players (12 currently).

Including the Panasonic DMP-BD35K 1080p Blu-ray Player - $228.76

I think this was a new model as well: Samsung BD-P1500 1080p Blu-ray Player $212.74

So I ordered the Panasonic DMP-BD35K, Constantine, Batman Begins, Batman Gotham Knight, and Goodfellas for a total of $205.72

Glad they brought the deal back. I already have the Panasonic DMP-BD55K in my cart waiting to pull the trigger, but the selection of titles isn't helping. I'd end up spending $80 on tiltles I don't want or otherwise need to save $20.

I knew they'd bring this back. It is a great deal but the selection appears less than before. I can't find two disc I want let alone four. I'll still bite if the selection improves.

For anyone buying a Panasonic player you can get an additional 2 movies by rebate from Panasonic. The movies are The Nightmare Before Christmas and Ratatouille.

So my dad just got a 1080p TV and is itching for a Bluray, is this the best deal around? I'll just tell him to get the Panasonic. He almost bit on the Sony Sears had for $180 but we as a family, hate Sony (and like Panasonic).

Thanks, OP! I bit the bullet and finally went BLU! I can't believe it!

I ordered:

Sony BDP-S550 1080p Blu-ray Player, Superman - The Movie [Blu-ray], Superman Returns [Blu-ray], Batman Begins [Blu-ray], and Speed Racer (Three-Disc Special Edition + Digital Copy) [Blu-ray], all for $299.08 shipped!

I'm so excited! I'll be picking up The Dark Knight on Blu-Ray next Tuesday, and I received Meet The Robinsons on Blu-Ray from a Disney promotion, some time back (I was actually supposed to get the DVD version, but, they sent the Blu-Ray by mistake). So, I will have a few titles to watch, right off the bat, as soon as my player arrives. Now, to get the HDTV to play it on. For the time being, I'll just hook it up, via component video, to my 27" Sony Trintron set, which should give me a decent enough picture.

Panny BD35 is up to $239 and can be ordered, but shows it ships in 1 to 2 months. Ten minutes ago there were 4 in stock and then after that they were going to be more on Dec. 6th - now a couple of months.

Who actually knows? I still would like a few other movies to be added before I bite on it.

key info:

- 5.1 speakers and 1080i tv (i'm not a graphics or audio aficionado so i'm not upgrading either)
- don't care about disc extras like commentaries and BD live

I think the "K" is just a code for the color of the player (in this case, black or black), because I know I've seen "S" for silver players before (although not on this particular model line).

(But that's just an educated guess, so I could be wrong)

I'm only asking this here since both of these players are in the sale, and the prices might jump before I ever get a response in the Players thread. I'm trying to decide between the Samsung 1500 and the Panny BD35. Someone please help sway me! I have a Sony 7.1 receiver, however it only has HDMI pass-through (wish I knew that before it was too late). So my audio will come via digital optical. My TV is only 1080i. Any comments that may help me decide? TIA!

I know most here seem to prefer the Sony and Panasonic players as those seem to be quick and have less problems with certain discs.

Personally, I own the 1500 and haven't had any major problems with it. It's been upgraded to the latest firmware (2.1 as of Dec 2nd) and the 40+ titles that I own are all pretty flawless. I don't have any complaints about the load times either.

Thanks, fumanstan. I believe this is the cheaper the 1500 has ever been (down to $201.63 now), and the Panny has been cheaper. I know I can get 2 free titles in the mail, but I'd rather save the 30 bucks now and get the Samsung, unless I hear good reasons to go with the Panny instead.

Unlike other etailers, Amazon aren't saps. They won't let you return part of a promotion that would void the terms of said promotion. This could also lead to Amazon banning you from their site(Amazon did a mass banning a couple of months ago of customers that they thought were abusive). It's not worth it, just be happy with your deal and enjoy that player!:)

I have done it, yes. But they pro-rate the Promotional Discount amongst the items bought, so you won't get the regular price for whatever you return. So in your example above, you would get $47.51 back, not 70.96. But I can't say for sure they always allow portions to be returns. I've successfully done it twice.

I ordered the Panasonic DMP-BD35K as a part of this deal and it showed up yesterday. So I put it through the paces last night and was overall very impressed (especially after I figured out how to set it to 24Hz mode), although I think my Toshiba HD-A30 does a somewhat better job as a SD DVD upconverter. And I was really impressed by the Panasonic's small size - it's the smallest player I've ever owned.

Deal is dead but, when I go into my cart, it still shows the promotion applied.

If I clicked that final button, would it still apply the promotion or would it order the player/movies without it?

I got my Sony BDP-S550 on Monday (left at neighbors house). Hooked it up Tuesday, and got The Dark Knight Batman Mask 2-Disc Edition from Target. Even hooked up to my 27 inch Sony Trinitron set, I can tell a big difference in picture quality. I can't wait to get my new HD set, which I plan to order next week! Then, Wednesday night, when I got home, the four Blu-Ray Discs I ordered along with the deal had arrived (Batman Begins, Superman: The Movie, Superman Returns, and Speed Racer). I also found the Blu-Ray of Meet The Robinson Disney sent me by mistake, instead of the DVD, during a promotion they had some time ago. It's amazing how much better everything looks played on the Blu-Ray player. I can only imagine how awesome it is going to look when I get my HD set.

Which leads me to my question. I have a small one bedroom apartment. My television set is about 8 to 10 feet away from my couch. I am thinking about ordering a Samsung 42 inch 720 Plasma (Samsung PN42A400 42-Inch 720p Plasma HDTV). Would that be sufficient for the distance I am sitting away from the television, as well as the size of the screen? Is there any reason to believe that I would be able to tell the difference if I went up to 1080p? The reason I ask, is because the price is much cheaper for the 720p, and I don't want to spend the extra money if I am not really going to be able to tell any real difference.

Thanks for any advice that you can give me!

My advise is to be sure that the screen size is larger enough for you. Because if you get the set and the 42" size then begins to seem to be too small, you're stuck with it if you're outside the return window. I personally would prefer something in the neighborhood of 46" for viewing from anywhere between 6'-10' distance, but your personal view of the size you need is what matters more here. Because you're looking at a plasma set, I suggest doing this test: go find a store with 42" plasma sets (any plasma sets will do for this test, so they don't need to have the particular model above), and then measure out (x number of shoes distance) and stand at your planned viewing distance from it for a while. And then try it again on a slightly larger set (both sets should be of the same technology, plasma in this case). If after doing this test, 42" seems large enough for you, then go ahead and get your set with confidence.

As for 720p vs. 1080p native resolution sets: I honestly cannot tell the difference between the two on sets below about 50" in size. And even on larger HDTV sets, the difference looks rather marginal until the screen size gets really big (i.e. front projector "big"). So if you can get a great deal on a 720p set, I say go for it!

Well, I would but the player went back up and I was hoping it'd go back down. Damn Amazon with their yo-yo pricing.

They keep jacking up the price on the BD35. They even raised the price on one of the movies that I had selected.:(

Yeah, they had a big raise so I'm now gonna wait for the After Christmas sales and see how it goes. The BD55 was for living room (receiver does not have HDMI) but I'm thinking of getting a HD TV for the bedroom so I might just go with the BD35. I guess we shall see how things go.

Based on this chart, you would see little difference between 720p and 1080p on a 42 inch screen at eight to ten feet.

last Thr, the link in the original post no longer worked so I tried loading up my cart and putting in the code anyway. got a invalid code error. tried again today and it worked. now I'm not sure if I entered the code wrong last Thr (I almost typed in 'bluewa100' instead of 'bluwa100' today) or if the promotion is back on. of course, I was going to get the Sony 550 and it's gone up $49 since last Thr!

I went all the way the final 'place order' screen and the $100 discount was there.

the Sony 550 went back down $30 so I went ahead and placed the order. the $100 off still works! again, I entered the 'BLUWA100' code today for the first time and it still worked.

Does anyone have the list of titles available in this promotion? I'd like to give it a shot if it still works.

I know these were some of the titles on the list...
Superman Returns, Superman: The Movie, Phantom of the Opera, Goodfellas, The Corpse Bride, Constantine, Blazing Saddles, Michael Clayton, Batman Begins, Speed Racer, V For Vendetta, Full Metal Jacket

And 2001: A Space Odyssey and The Shining too, I think

I got Blood Diamond and I think I remember Syriana, ATL, and Natural Born Killers being on the list also.

note that you have to buy the player from amazon, not one that is being sold by one of their partners.

I'm not getting this to work at all...

I just tried and it works just fine.
I put the Sony S550, Constantine, Batman Begins, Constantine and Superman Returns in my shopping cart, then entered the BLUWA100 promotional code during checkout and the price dropped $100- to about $312-.

So, my advice is:

1) Put a qualifying Blu Ray player in your cart (I'm not sure which ones qualify besides the S550, but make sure they ship from Amazon).
2) Put 4 qualifying Blu Ray discs in your cart (Once again, I'm not sure which ones qualify, but the lists in the previous posts would be a good place to start).
3) Enter the BLUWA100 code during checkout.

Good luck!

Won't work for me either. Hopefully they will bring this deal back.

I'd be interested to hear opinions from people on the upconverting capabilities of these players. Especially if you had or have a Toshiba HD-DVD player.

I'm looking to hop in on this deal (if it returns) and really just want to buy a BD player that (outside of its BD capabilities) can match or outperform the upconversion of the Toshiba A30 that I have.

I do have a PS3 but would like a dedicated BD player.

This deal still looks to be good. I have the panasonic 35 and four movies in my cart and the $100 promotion is still linked to it. Technically this deal was good til Dec. 31st - but with Amazon you never know. I am waiting to see if the player will come down some more since they jacked the price up about $50 since I originally put them in the cart. Still kicking myself for hesitating on the Samsung deal with 8 movies (which Amazon pulled the day it was listed).

The items I have in the cart for the deal are: the panny 35 and movies are batman begins, michael clayton, Vendetta and Corpse Bride.

I agree about the Samsung + 8 movies deal but you didn't have to hesitate very long to miss that one. I went with the Samsung + 4 movies.

For anyone buying a Panasonic player you can get an additional 2 movies by rebate from Panasonic. The movies are The Nightmare Before Christmas and Ratatouille.

This rebate form mentions "original cash register receipt" being needed - what would count as that from Amazon?

A packing list usually won't do for a rebate. Go to Amazon.com, click on your account, type in your email and password, then click on recent orders, open the correct order, and then click on 'Need to print an invoice' near the bottom of the page. That is the same as a receipt.

I've used the packing list from Amazon shipments for most of my rebates. They include date, price, and description -- and, to me, look more like a receipt than invoices printed from the website. Never had a problem using these.

The panasonic + 4 blu ray is dead. I hope Amazon will do it again soon.
