Oldboy North American remake

You knew this was going to happen so here it is...

Supposedly, Universal is the studio that got the rights, Justin Lin will be directing it and Nicolas Cage is interested for the lead role.

I suppose a remake is inevitable .... if it has to happen, Nicholas Cage would seem to be a good choice.

Yet another pointless remake.

The original is great, and is only 1 year old.

Why would anyone want to watch a remake when the original is available?

I don't mind remakes at all - as long as they're good.

But Justin Lin?

Why?

This has bad idea and failure written all over it.

The only way this would be worth my time would be if it was directed by David Fincher, starring Benicio DelTorro, with Scarlet Johansen as the girl and Christian Bale as his captor.

Who knows. Maybe they wanted something to stay Korean about the movie, so they hired him. Or maybe he was just a big fan and lobbied for the spot. Nonetheless, I don't have much faith in it. I'd rather someone just get me a region 1 release of the original.

You're all wrong... this will be huge cuz the story is amazing. It will do better here as a remake because americans don't like reading subtitles. Also - white americans like to watch movies about other white people and they have trouble identifying with asian folks. Factoring in the cost of making a new film versus acuiring the rights of the original (advertising for both let's assume is the same) against potential profits of an american film starring nick cage versus an imported film in Korean (a language many americans probably don't even know exists as many americans probably think asians are either chinese or japanese and that's it) starring nobody they've ever heard of subtitled - remake will win the numbers game every time.

I think that this remake will be the most talked about movie when it comes out (ala Crying Game). It'll probably build in it's audience if they are uncomprimising with the story. I'd hate to see it watered down for an American audience. If Martin Scorcese can remake Infernal Affairs, then I guess we can have a remake for Oldboy. Not too down about the idea since it will bring a larger audience to seek out the original film (which will more than likely be the superior). I wonder who they will get to play Nic's love interest...

Spoiler:
Allison Lohman maybe?

Lin is not Korean. I think he is taiwanese. But he sucks as a director. Better Luck Tomorrow was a sorry excuse of a movie that was so far from reality that i could not relate to at all.

This has nothing to do with the remake for Oldboy, rather this is more a contemplative question on a particular reviewer.

That and I figured we didn't need another Oldboy nor Ebert thread, as there seem to be quite a few scattered throughout the site.

Roger Ebert at the 2004 Cannes Film Fest made some pretty suggestively negative sounding comments toward Oldboy, and now it's a 4-star movie.

Guess it goes to show, can never judge a comment alone.

Roger Ebert at the 2004 Cannes Film Fest made some pretty suggestively negative sounding comments toward Oldboy, and yet doing a search on his site, he has it listed as a 4 star movie.

Sure, the review won't be up til tomorrow (the star ratings generally go up the night prior to the review, never really understood why but eh), but it's much more fun to speculate. What the hell would cause that much of a sway?

That said, now watch them update tomorrow and have a 0.

Hehe.
I think he mentioned something about being put off by the "sadism and savagery." This coming from Ebert, who raved about The Passion of the Christ. I would expect a revenge story to have a certain level of violence, both physical and emotional. Honestly, I don't care what he says about it. I've already seen it and thought it was amazing.

Ebert... meh. And witness the witless jingoism of Rex Reed:
For sewage in a cocktail shaker, there is Oldboy, a noxious helping of Korean Grand Guignol as pointless as it is shocking. What else can you expect from a nation weaned on kimchi, a mixture of raw garlic and cabbage buried underground until it rots, dug up from the grave and then served in earthenware pots sold at the Seoul airport as souvenirs? --REX REED

It's amazing that Rex Reed can judge an entire society based on this one movie. This guy needs to be shot into space.

If Rex Reed feels that this is a pointless shocking movie then i wonder what he thinks of Miike. He must really really hate him. OH and Reed is a moron

Rex Reed's pathetic comment on Oldboy and his generalizations just show this guy's absolute ignorance on world cinema.

Obviously, no one from the company that's releasing Oldboy in US theatres didn't have either the funds to contribute for some "positive review" or someone lowering themselves and suck his dick.

If I was Korean I'd be quite offended by his cultural generalizations.

"What else can you expect from a nation weaned on kimchi, a mixture of raw garlic and cabbage buried underground until it rots, dug up from the grave and then served in earthenware pots sold at the Seoul airport as souvenirs"

Plus, he clearly is a stupid moron.

"What is going on here? Nobody knows."
"He eats a live eel."
"A severed hand rips out a man’s teeth, one by one, with a hammer."
"Part kung fu, part revenge-theme Charlie Chan murder mystery, part metaphysical Oriental mumbo-jumbo, all of it incomprehensible."
"I walked out at the point where he grabbed a pair of sharp scissors and cut his tongue off in blood-splattering close-ups."

I wonder what Reed would make of Miike's films. No, strike that - I really don't care what he thinks about anything.
