The ED HARRIS Appreciation Thread
Aside from Tommy Lee Jones, actor Ed Harris has been around a very long time, but didn’t become A-List until much later in his career. I mean, this guy was an up-and-comer back in 1982 with Creepshow (which I nearly forgot he was in) and 1983 with The Right Stuff, but didn’t really become a superstar until…well, I would say when he got his first Oscar-nomination in 1995 for Apollo 13, but that’s just opinion. He had good roles in 1991’s Glengarry Glen Ross (as a screamer), 1993’s The Firm and Needful Things…thing is, while his career was really good in the 1990’s, his career was great in the 2000’s! This guy’s career just keeps getting better and better, and shows no sign of slowing down – not with Apaloosa that came out this year and Gone Baby Gone from a year ago.

Seriously, the film may have been overrated at the time, but Harris was friggin' BRILLIANT! I watched it again last month and his performance as evilly Machiavellian and lovingly parental at the same time was a thing of wonder. Love that guy.

Ed Harris is one of those underrated actors you could always count on. History of Violence was the role that really made me witness greatness at work. Glengarry Glen Ross Apollo 13, The Rock, Truman Show.

Ed Harris was one of those actors that i never really cared for...but the more i have seen him the more i have come to appreciate his talent. He has been in some movies that whilst not loved by most, i find to be really pretty good movies. Needful Things and the Abyss to name but two. I recently re-watched The Right Stuff and he is excellent in it as John Glen. He was awesome in Glengary Glenross (but then so were all the cast), and he was great in A Beautiful Mind (and boy do i hate Ron Howard movies). For me though i still get a big chuckle every time i see his crazy dance in Creepshow.

I still remember that scene of the Border Patrol agent opening the back of that truck to look for illegals, and a very young Ed Harris waiting behind door #2 with a sawed-off double barrel to the chest. This was in the old Charles Bronson film, a good one by comparison to many of his, 'Borderline'.
His role as that German sniper in 'Enemy At The Gates' made that movie for me. That was a real guy he played too. That actual German sniper was some piece of work.
His small role in the TV movie of 'The Stand' lent so much credibility to it. Quoting some of my favorite Yeats stuff in the progress of his part.
Did Ed Harris play Orrin Porter Rockwell in a film? Where am I remembering that from?

I was lucky enough to meet Ed Harris last month at a screening of Appaloosa. He was super nice and was pretty amazed when I had him sign my Japanese Creepshow poster. He's one of those 100% solid, dependable actors that you can always trust to deliver a great performance. Not a whole lot of guys can give you that kind of assurance these days.
