Jimmy Smits Accidentally Stabs Dexter Stuntman With Real Knife
Ouchie mama.
Actor Jimmy Smits accidentally stabbed a stuntman with a real knife during a fight scene for the TV show DEXTER.
During the scene, Jimmy grabbed a real knife instead of a prop knife and stuck into into stuntman Jeff Chase's chest.
Jeff was saved because the knife miraculously hit a small piece of plastic that was placed over his heart.
He explains, "For the scene, I was bound in Saran Wrap, duct tape over my mouth. I couldn't say a thing as I saw Jimmy grab at the knife."
"He picked up the real one by pure mistake."
"I heard fellow actor Michael C. Hall yelling at Jimmy to stop - but it was too late. I felt the thud in my chest. I didn't have on a metal breast plate like a lot of actors do in a scene like that."
"Instead I had a piece of acrylic clear plastic about the size of a Post-it note over my heart. It was a quarter of an inch thick."
"In eight out of 10 takes with the prop knife, Jimmy had missed the plastic. But by a miracle, an act of God, the knife landed at the very edge of the plastic."
"I really thought I'd been stabbed in the heart, but I didn't have a scratch. Jimmy was devastated and couldn't stop apologising. I told him, I felt more sorry for him than me."
Yikes.
We smell an investigation into stunt safety on that set...

Why on Earth would they have a real knife sitting right next to the prop knife?!

You'd think Hollywood would have learned its lesson after Brandon Lee was killed by an improperly used firearm.

well i'm not sure how you could report this story without spoiling a plot point. while not specifically, we learn something. damn, that sucks.

Shouldn't they have a weapons-master on the set whenever they're using a knife or gun? Especially if the actors are going to be stabbing each other... geez.

Or John Eric Hexum for that matter.

The barest of details (like the title) would not be a spoiler if you ask me. Smits could have accidentially stabbed a stuntman in a number of ways that aren't plot-related.
The details of how they were shooting what are absolutely spoilers, though.
