DeepDiscount. Make up your mind!
I ordered a bunch of titles from DD last week and received 3 nice foam envelopes full of DVDs. Today, another single title I ordered arrived in the old cardboard shit packaging. I thought they were finally shipping things better.

I made a few orders with DD a month or two ago and both single DVD orders arrived in the cardboard crap. Each time I went to my mailbox and pulled out the package, I heard the famous DD floater rattle(never had an Amazon floater that I can remember). But, I'm not hinting I'll never order from DD again, just saying the price of the DVD will have to be low enough to make me order it keeping in mind it will be a floater.
Edit to add-I also remember now that one of the orders also had a broken hub so I had to replace the case too. Oh well, life goes on...

Really ? I posted during the last sale that I wish they would send all of their stuff in the envelopes. Everytime I get the shitty cardboard my stuff is damaged.

When they finally do arrive, it better not be in a bubble mailer!

I can't believe that, over ten years into the technology, the DVD industry has been incapable of conceiving of, or is unwilling to institute, a DVD case design that prevents floaters. I thought of a foolproof design after five minutes of contemplation.

I think they use more than one distributor, so one might use different packaging than the other.

My latest shipments arrived in nice sturdy boxes sealed nicely. However, I received a couple of boxsets in this order and the previous one with floaters.

Here's a sketch I threw together just now on Paint:
The right side of the open case would stay essentially the same, except the spindle (?) would have a hole in the middle. On the left, instead of clips, you would have a flap with a cylindrical knob sticking off the end. The DVD is placed onto the spindle, as normal, and when the case is closed the knob enters the hole in the spindle, preventing the DVD from flying around inside the case and getting scratched. If the DVD were to come loose from behind the spindle tabs, which could still happen, it would merely move up and down along the knob.

I never liked the cardboard boxes. They throw 5 or more DVD in a box all loose to bang around and usually end up with floaters. Not to mention boxes get crushed. I've seen boxes that looked like they were run over by the damn UPS truck. I think it's more difficult to stack enough on an envelope to be dangerous to the contents. I've seen my fair share of floaters either way though. Last time I took part in a 20% at DD, I received like 5 packages out of 7/8 with at least 1 floater. Even got a snapcase floater with a busted hub. Definitely not my month. Gotta wonder if stuff like that leaves the warehouse FUBAR or gets that way a during the trip.

Sounds dirty too: "...the knob enters the hole...move up and down along the knob."
Two or three cents worth of extra plastic.
Why? It's almost as easy to slip an insert in behind the flap as it is with normal clips.

Such keepcases with similar solutions do exist already, I've seen a few. Usually generic replacement keepcases, but some odd DVD releases have had them too. The front flap locks into the hub in some way or other, or taps that presses the disc down near the edge so it can't move.
The idea with the lock that allows booklets is quite nice though.
