Question about Kubrick's "The Killing"

I've seen this film several times before, but this was the first time I really thought about this.
Spoiler:
I noticed the voice-over narration at the beginning intoned something like "This is the last day of Johnny Clay's life." However, at the end of the film it appears as if he is about to be arrested. When Coleen Gray suggests he make a run for it, Clay mutters, defeated, "Eh, what's the difference...". Are we to assume he decided to shoot it out at the last second? Has anyone read the Lionel White book? Also, did anyone else notice the small sign advertising Lenny Bruce near the Sterling Hayden's hideout?

Spoiler:
The trivia on the IDMB page mentions this:
The narration was added at the studio's insistence. Stanley Kubrick hated the idea and thus makes much of the information that the narrator provides false or mistaken.
So he may have added that as a red herring or just as an outright lie.

^ Knowing Kubrick I'd suspect the latter. Fantastic film.

Definitely my favorite Kubrick film, other than Dr. Strangelove. I just love Timothy Carey, he steals every film he appears in with his unusual line readings and general oddball demeanor. The moment in the film when he reaches out, both absently and somewhat lovingly, and touches Sterling Hayden's tie is such a strange, though utterly naturalistic gesture. A true original of the silver screen.

To Timothy Agoglia Carey!

Yeah, I've always wanted to see The World's Greatest Sinner, but have never had the chance too. Hopefully they'll release this one day so I can take a look...

I'd kill to see that. One of the legendary cult films, with a soundtrack by the young Frank Zappa. Here's a brief clip of Carey rockin' on stage.

It isn't that far of a stretch to describe your last day of freedom as the last day of your life.

I just watched Carey in my film class last night in Paths of Glory (excellent film, btw). I'm going to try to remember to DVR Greatest Sinner tonight. That guy is a scene stealer.

Yeah, there is something great about this actor.
Like he has the Marlon Brando, James Dean magic.

I unfortunately missed the TCM showing of The World's Greatest Sinner.

It looks like I am going to have to wait until next April before TCM replays it.

This is truly a lost film, and I've been waiting years to see it.
