I don't think anyone really expected that, and haven't for a long time. Breaking $500, I think, qualifies it for more than a simple nice run, that's amazing.

Yep, I never expected TDK to get even close to $600m. Hell, before this summer I didn't think it could get that close to $300m, lol.
As for the openers, I'm happy to see Disaster Movie bombed and won't even make $20m total. And Traitor actually did alright. Not a huge opening but it did have the highest PTA of all the movies on that list.

I'm glad Tropic Thunder is hanging in there. It deserves to do well.
Kudos to TDK for passing $500m this weekend. Considering most people in the "Guess the Summer Box Office Champ" thread didn't think it would make more than $250-$275m this is certainly a welcome surprise.
Another bomb for Vin Diesel. No wonder he signed on for another Fast & Furious film.
Disaster Movie, thankfully, dies the painful death is deserves.

Hmm I wonder if Babylon AD can be chalked up to more executive meddling from Fox? The director was pissed in an article i read recently.

the dark knights run will go down as the most impressive ever. The 600 million titanic made is just not that impressive when you look at how long it played in theaters and the fact that tickets and gas prices were much cheaper in 1997. but whos to say a movie in the next few years wont top what the TDK did.

The fact that it took 11 years for a movie to even get within 100 million of Titanic's gross with higher ticket prices shows that it could be a long time before another movie makes this much.

I find Dark Knight's take impressive in today's climate. Movies nowadays have a DVD announcement while it's still in theaters. It also faced competition from all the summer movies and the people who don't even go to the movies cause of the high ticket prices and just wait to watch it on their home theater.

Saw Death Race last night, quite an enjoyable flick, pure mindless fun.

Nothing simple or nice about it. More like kick ass! I certainly never expected it to do more than 300M before it opened. Just based on what "Begins" made. I don't even think Warner Brothers expected it be THAT big. Which is why they're fucking with the Superman franchise now. Yes, I said fucking. I want it to stay light. Bring in anyone you want now at this point, I don't care. But Superman should not be dark like "TDK" IMO. Speaking of which, I still haven't had a chance to see "TDK" at IMAX. I hear it's still a madhouse trying to get in. I hope it plays there a while. I must see it there, and then buy the Blu-Ray of course

I wonder why Labor Day isn't bigger for Hollywood? Summer fatigue. Either way, "Babylon AD" is awful and "Hamlet 2" surprisingly had more heart than you'd think.

The big surprise to me is Vicky Cristina Barcelona. The movie had a limited release in 692 theaters and hasn't been doing "amazing" per se, but last weekend it dropped a mere 20% and Friday-to-Friday for this weekend, it only dropped around 11%. It is likely to be #10 for the weekend. It isn't doing great, but it's still good to see it hanging in there.
Weekend 1 - $3,755,575
Weekend 2 - $3,005,031 (-20%)
Weekend 3 - This Weekend it should drop around 10%, so ~ $2.7m for the weekend.
It's really rare to see a movie start that low but sustain itself that well.

True. Plus Dark Knight came out during a horrendous economy & in a time where rather than give a movie multiple theatrical viewings, most folks would rather save all that cash for the super duper dvd or bd release they can watch in their home theater.

Absolutely. "Titanic" was THE blockbuster last decade. And "The Dark Knight" the one for this. Next up? The DVD sales for "TDK". It's going to be astronomical. And I bet you Blu-Ray player sales go up a little

Well, if you blink you'll miss it. I certainly wouldn't sell the movie on that kiss. But it's an excellent film. The wood man's best since "Match Point". A better film IMO.
