View Full Version : Need Advice - taking the kids to Vegas

Next summer is my 50th birthday so the wife suggested we all go to Vegas. My daughter will be 18 and my son 20. I know the legal age to gamble is 21 and I've been there numerous times but I don't know the rules regarding "adult" children. Will they be able to hang in the casino as long as they aren't gambling? We'll go to the pool and do the whole walking tour. We'll take in a couple comedy shows. Any suggestions or recommendations from someone who has brought underage kids?

They can pass through the casino, but not loiter inside.

Just give them some cash and let them do their own thing. Nothing bad can happen.

Don't dance around it, how do you really feel?

Why not go on your 55th birthday? Then everyone will be old enough and everyone can do everything.

Maybe we'll go then too? It was my wife's idea and her ideas usually revolve around doing something with her sisters and their families. So just the fact that she was looking at doing something special just with us is a plus. She has a good idea so seldom I hate to discourage her. She was under the impression the age was 18, not 21 when she brought it up.

The way I see it is we make it a 3 maybe 4 days tops. Fly in on a Monday, we're there at noon. Do a few sights, hang at the pool, see a show. I can hit the tables after they go to bed.

Day 2 we can spend some time really showing them around, do a couple of the cheapie or free attractions, the car museum, Liberace museum, whatever. Hang by the pool, one more show. We're on the east coast so the last day we basically have to get up and go to the airport. If we stay a 4th day, we could rent a car and go to some of the sights like Hoover dam or maybe take a day and a half for Grand Canyon. I've only seen it from the air.

For a first timer, there's enough to see that they've seen in the movies it will keep them occupied for a couple days. I was just hoping people had some other ideas, besides the "don't take the kids" idea.

Take them to The Beatles: Love or Penn & Teller. Blue Man Group is a good option too. We saw all three on our recent trip to Vegas. Look around on the web for potential ticket deals.

If you guys have never been to California, the border isn't that far from Vegas. Might be worth the drive out to the state line just so everyone can say they've been to both coasts. I'm an east coaster too, so the wife and I wanted to make the trip since we'd never been that far west. There's a handful of cheesy casinos there (one with a roller coaster) and a pretty nice outlet mall.

Grand Canyon would be hard to do in a day. The South Rim is about 220 miles From Vegas. The "West Rim" is like 80 miles, but I dont know what its like out there. I know that the Hualapai Indian Tribe has a visitors center with a glass bottomed 'Skywalk', but I think its really expensive. Zion NP is about 150 miles away and you can see quite a bit of it in a day trip.
