So after today TDK will stand alone as the #2 highest grossing film (domestic) of all time. Woohoo! 500 million here we come!

Guess all those people that said they wouldn't be seeing the Star Wars movie are...actually going to see it anyway.

It's going to make around $18m, but for the Star Wars brand, that's not very good. I think the movie was propelled by families more than anything.

Re: TDK - So it looks like it'll cross $500m in about 2 weeks as it won't have the strong weekdays with the summer coming to a close, but soft weekend drops could make up for it.

An 18 million dollar opening for a SW movie is terrible considering how big the fanbase is. A typical Pixar Animated movie usually takes in about 40-50 million its opening weekend, and The Clone Wars is going to get about half of that.

Trust me, every friend I know who grew up with the OT, and did see the PT in the theaters, did not go see this crap. Either they weren't interested in more Clone Wars Stories, or they had enough of getting burned by Lucas. I have been a fan of the series since 1977, and this is the first SW-related project I sat out, so the boxoffice definitely reflects the attitudes I see amongst my friends.

agreed. that said, I don't think they really had much faith in this doing all too well at the box office. I mean, an August release for something Star Wars-related? You just knew it wasn't going to be very good.

See, I think they put it out in August cause there were no competition, but in the end, the critics ripped it, the OT fans didn't want to get burned again, and all that was left were parents taking their kids.

In saying that, I was suprised it didnt do about 30-40 million opening weekend, cause as I said, a good Pixar film usually makes 40+ million. Alot of people I know said they didn't want to see it, and all around the internet they were saying to boycott it, I was just suprised that SW fans actually backed it up this time!

Enjoyed Clone Wars. Seriously though, this is the pilot to a television show that they decided to release theatrically, no one could have expected a 50 million opening. I mean, how well did Batman Mask of the Phantasm do theatrically? I see it as the same kind of deal, except that was a VERY exceptional cartoon.

to each his own. Can't wait to see Tropic Thunder, and GLAD I saw Clone Wars - looking forward to the show.

No surprise seeing Tropic Thunder on top. I can see Star Wars not making much, the kids are back in school and summer is ending. TDK seems to be slowing but it should hit $500 mil. I don't plan on seeing Clone Wars anytime soon, but I might try and see Thunder some time.

But not before The Rocker

I wouldn't be surprised if Clone Wars took #1 at the box office if Tropic Thunder has a Saturday drop.

It's not a "Star Wars movie", and you should know that. It's a simple kiddie preview of the upcoming show. I'm surprised it even made as much as it did this weekend.

Not going to happen. A report on Deadline Hollywood had TT making $9.6m (+17%), TDK $6.7m (+34%) and CW $5m (-20%) on Saturday. Here's how it's looking right now:

1. Tropic Thunder - $26m
2. The Dark Knight - $17m
3. Star Wars: Clone Wars - $15.5m

Mirrors - $11.6m
Pineapple Express - $10m
Vicky Cristina Barcelona - $3.3m
Fly Me to the Moon - $2m

I think you misunderstood my post, I was not expecting this movie to do 90 million opening weekend like Episode I, II, or III, but in saying that most kids movies that come from Pixar that are well liked by parents who take their kids usually make about 40+ million opening weekend (Toy Story, Monsters Inc, Finding Nemo, etc.) This movie will do about half of that plus the fact that you have an existing fanbase with a brand name that everyone has known for years whether you are a kid, parent, teenager, etc. I was expecting this to do about 40 million, cause I thought with the mix of parents bringing their kids and SW fanboys, this could make a good buck, but I still say 18 million is not what Lucas & Co. projected.

Tropic did pretty good. A definite BD purchase for me - but there is simply too much out in theaters I have yet to watch (Mummy 3, Pineapple) which will keep me from seeing this.

Clone Wars had so much working against it for a big opening:

-It's not live-action, therefore it's not an "official" Star Wars movie.
-Lucas didn't direct it. So much for a pedigree.
-The animation looked very cartoon-y, not very progressive at all. Beowulf-style CG might have convinced audiences otherwise.
-A late August release? Seems like Warner Bros. didn't care much, either.
-The reviews have been terrible, much worse so than Episode I or II.

I never saw this making much more than $20 million in its opening weekend, and even with a number like that it would have been lucky.

This'll probably sink like a stone and finish off with under $40 million domestically.

I imagine Lucas will downplay it, Clone Wars had little cost and was meant to introduce the tv series, etc.. but hopefully this teaches him he just can't slap the SW name on anything and expect to rake in the $$$.

If Lucas had really set the marketing machine into overdrive, I'm sure people would have looked at it as an official movie.

You might want to check the directing credits on a pair of movies: The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi. As for pedigree, I think the fact that Lucas didn't direct Clone Wars was actually a selling point for many people.

This movie was done mostly as an afterthought. The animated TV series is the real goal of the Clone Wars project, this is just a little cherry on top. It wasn't meant to be a blockbuster film by itself.

I was going to disagree with this, but then I saw that Clone Wars got a 19% at Rotten Tomatoes, while Episode I got a 64%, and Episode II got a 67%. So, yeah, you're right there.

Looks like this might be the last weekend a movie makes more than $20 million for at least a few weeks. I guess the summer movie season as we know it is pretty much over with all the big ones being released now.
Best of Summer : Dark Knight , Iron Man
Ok but should have been better: Sex and the City, Hulk, X-files, Tropic Thunder, Indy 4
Biggest Disappointments: Hellboy II, Pineapple Express

...Also can anyone find the thread that had the predictions for the summer '08 grosses.? I cant seem to find it.

August is usually a dump month anyway. It's been pretty great this year.
