"Sherlock Holmes" ...Guy Ritchie developing new movie.

just saw this on G4 and Access Hollywood. if it is dark and mysterious with some of Ritchie's patent twists i could go for it.

Read that they are looking to "re-invent" Holmes and make him more "adventuresome."...Seems like a Hollywood dumbing down to bring in the teenagers. IMO Ritchie hasn't done anything worthwhile since "Snatch"

The man still made Snatch and because of that I will always be interested in what he's doing next.

Robert Downey Jr is Sherlock Holmes (dir. by Guy Ritchie)

Robert Downey Jr. to Play Sherlock Holmes

Compiled by JACQUES STEINBERG
Published: July 11, 2008

In the first role he has signed up for since “Iron Man,” Robert Downey Jr., left, will forsake his high-tech suit for a woolen cloak and cap. Mr. Downey has agreed to play the lead role in the film “Sherlock Holmes,” which will be directed by Guy Ritchie for Warner Brothers, Variety reported. The film is scheduled to begin shooting in October, with a screenplay by Anthony Peckham based on the detective stories of Arthur Conan Doyle and on a comic book, also called “Sherlock Holmes.” Most of the movie will be filmed in London. In the role, which Variety said would plumb Holmes’s brawn as well as his brains, Mr. Downey will have some competition. Columbia Pictures is also preparing a movie based on Holmes, this one a comedy with Sacha Baron Cohen as the title character and Will Ferrell as his sidekick, Dr. Watson.

And weird that it looks like one will be a comedy whereas one will be serious. Guy Ritchie helming this has me interested though.

Why do studios always seem to release movies with similar subjects at the same time (or close to it)?

Red Planet/Mission to Mars
Deep Impact/Armageddon
Troy/Alexander
Ants/Bug's Life
Surf's Up/Happy Feet
Volcano/Dante's Peak
The Illusionist/The Prestige
Sex and the City/Punisher

According to those Palin-loathing dudes at Latino Review, Crowe is in talks to play Moriarty, Holmes creepy-smart arch-nemesis. You’ll recall that director Guy Ritchie only pffft’d Crowe for the aforementioned sidekick role, which still hasn’t been cast. LR report that Gerard Butler was offered the part, but didn’t bite. Not roundy enough?

Coming Soon report that prolific British actor, Mark Strong (Body of Lies, Rocknrolla, Sunshine) has signed on, and LR add that he’ll play a character named Blackwood. More casting news and confirmations as they develop.

From Variety:
Jude Law is expected to close a deal shortly to play Watson, the super-sleuth's sidekick.

I think it's pretty much impossible to miscast Downey.

I'd be looking forward to this if Guy Ritchie wasn't attached.

Yeah, I have a somewhat hard time imagining a Sherlock film by Ritchie...considering that Ritchie's style of tone in his films is kinda hyperish...of course I never saw the one with Madonna so I dunno. Heard that sucked though...so I dunno. So is this a detective film or like action/comedy type of film? Cuz...I wouldn't mind seeing a true Sherlock film that harked to the spirit of the great tales from the past.

Since this is a Guy Ritchie film, I totally expect Holmes to say "No shit, Sherlock!"

Watson isn't supposed to be a funny sidekick -- that's the invention of bad adaptations. Why can't anyone make a decent Holmes movie without turning it into a farce, or Indiana Jones adventure with teenagers?

Absolutely!

Downey (still) = absurd miscasting.

Who, out of today's big names, would make a good Holmes, is an interesting question. IMHO, Liam Neeson would be interesting to see.

I think Ritchie is very overrated, but all I need to hear is Robert Downey Jr. and you've got my interest.
