A recent trend in mystery novels.
This trend may not be too recent, but I have noticed many themed series in my local Chapters. I don't mean series featuring the same detective, as they always have (Poirot, Holmes, Murder She Wrote, Midomser Murders etc), but also tying in some theme like tea, coffee, recipes or organizational tips.
I tried the coffee series, and found the first book slow, the mystery weak and not even the main focus of most chapters, and the detailed descriptions of men's physique very unnecessary.
It seems to me that a themed novel makes sense, but that a themed series stretches the concept much too far.
Out of curiosity, does anyone know which series came first? Was it stronger than the others, and just inspired all the copy cat attempts?
