Salo (br)

According to two different sources Pasolini's Salo has been set for a September 22 release in the UK. The previous release of this film in the UK was courtesy of the BFI and I have not seen any news indicating that they will be releasing on BR. But, Tartan own the rights for the rest of the Pasolini's works so if Salo has become their property perhaps there is a chance that the UK distrib could surprise us with another great transfer (The Seventh Seal).

On the same day a 2DVD SE arrives as well.

Ciao,
Pro-B

Hello Toddly,

Let me word this post properly as there seem to be a lot of nervous people as of late elsewhere on this forum:

If you appreciated, not liked, Makavejev's work then I believe that you are mature enough to understand and appreciate what Pasolini did in Salo.

Hope this helps.

By the way, here's the coverwork for the 2DVD set which streets on the same day the BR does. I expect the BR cover to be identical:

Sorry if I might have missed this somewhere, but can we expect a US release of Salo in BR?

I don't think it's possible to actually "like" Salo. It's the type of movie you may appreciate artistically, or appreciate as a curiosity, but "like" isn't the sort of word you'd use in connection with it.

From DvdBeaver:

BFI to release Salò on Blu-ray and DVD
with stunning special features

3 July 2008 – The BFI announces that its first Blu-ray title Salò or The 120 Days of Sodom will be released on 22 September. The film will also be re-issued on DVD. Both formats will contain a wealth of stunning extras.

Pier Paolo Pasolini’s final and most controversial film has been banned, censored and reviled the world over since its first release in 1975. It did not receive UK certification until late 2000, when it was passed uncut.

The film’s content and imagery is extreme and it retains the power to shock, repel and distress. A brutal allegory based on the novel 120 Days of Sodom by the Marquis de Sade, the film is a cinematic milestone – culturally significant, politically vital and visually stunning.

DISC ONE (DVD & Blu-ray)

· Fully Complete & Uncut, telecined from original Italian restoration negatives

· DVD: 1.66:1 (16x9 Enhanced) / PAL DVD9 / DD mono (320 kbps)

· BD: 1.66:1 (1080p, 24fps) / BD25 / PCM mono

· Original Italian language version (with optional English subtitles)

· Original English language version (with optional HoH subtitles)

· Original Italian trailer (with optional English subtitles)

· Coil - Ostia (the Death of Pasolini) The original 1987 track from Coil's celebrated second album, Horse Rotorvator, with a newly created video accompaniment, shot especially for this release, by Peter Christopherson.

DISC TWO (Standard Def PAL DVD Disc, to be included in both DVD & BD editions)

· On set footage and interviews (1974, 25m) – newly created documentary using full colour footage shot in 1974 by acclaimed film journalist and Pasolini expert Gideon Bachmann.

· Whoever Says the Truth Shall Die (1981, 58m) Philo Bregstein's classic documentary on the life and death of Pier Paolo Pasolini.

· Fade to Black (2001, 25m) – documentary with Mark Kermode exploring the ongoing relevance and power of Pasolini's controversial masterpiece, with Bernardo Bertolucci and other leading directors.

· Ostia (1991, 25m, with optional director commentary track) – Julian Cole's short film about the last days of Pasolini, starring Derek Jarman.

Fully illustrated booklet

· Newly commissioned essay by Sam Rohdie (Italian film scholar and author on Pasolini)

· Sight & Sound article by Gideon Bachmann incorporating his on-set diary

· 1979 review of the film by Gilbert Adair

· James Ferman letter to the Director of Public Prosecutions

· Cast and credits for the film

· Pasolini biography by Italian film specialist Geoffrey Nowell-Smith

· Photographs of Pasolini at work on set

Release date: 22 September 2008

RRP BD £24.99, DVD £22.99 / BD cat no: BFIVD790 / DVD cat no: BFIVD791 / cert 18

crikey!

and here are the Criterion extras to match up:

- SPECIAL EDITION DOUBLE-DISC SET FEATURES:
- New, restored high-definition digital transfer
- "Salò": Yesterday and Today, a 33-minute documentary featuring interviews with director Pier Paolo Pasolini, actor-filmmaker Jean-Claude Biette, and Pasolini friend Nineto Davoli
- Fade to Black, a 23-minute documentary featuring directors Bernardo Bertolucci, Catherine Breillat, and John Maybury, as well as scholar David Forgacs
- The End of "Salò", a 40-minute documentary about the film’s production
- New interviews with set designer Dante Ferretti and director and film scholar Jean-Pierre Gorin
- Optional English-dubbed soundtrack
- Theatrical trailer
- PLUS: A booklet featuring new essays by Neil Bartlett, Catherine Breillat, Naomi Greene, Sam Rohdie, Roberto Chiesi, and Gary Indiana, and excerpts from Gideon Bachmann’s on-set diary

damn damn... might have to buy the standard Criterion disc and the BFI bluray - the latter will be region free right?

All of the extras sound very impressive but I am primarily interested in the presentation. Let's hope that the newly struck transfer lives up to the expectations.

love the cover, it's just as lurid as the initial Criterion laserdisc with the helpless naked victim tied face down, and being whipped.

A Criterion BD of Salò has been all but confirmed, they're just holding off on the official announcement for some reason. Hopefully they do it before the standard-def version comes out -- otherwise you're going to see people buying the DVD and getting justifiably miffed when the BD is announced a month or two down the line. (The same thing happened during the LD-to-DVD transition period.)

My comment remains: I have not seen any official announcement yet And all the rumor-talking on the Criterion forum means zero to me if the powers to be don't deliver (a particular Resnais film has been a certainty for years now).

This being said seeing how incredibly strong Tartan's Bergman disc was I have every reason to believe that this BFI release will be top-notch. Especially given the fact that they went straight to the original source for it.

I will be acquiring the BFI disc as I, personally, do not see a reason to hold off, Criterion or not.

That cover is A LOT better than the standard, but Blu-Ray? For Salo???? Pass. I wouldn't want to see all that in high def. Don't think I could take it.

Giles, if you at work you should be working...I think. Anyhow I personally think that the cover is top notch (this is actually the poster they used in the UK not too long ago).
