Traitor - Cheadle and Pearce

Has anybody heard about this one? I did a search and nothing turned up. It looks really interesting! I feel like the back half of this year is quickly becoming loaded with some quality films that were running silent compared to the summer blockbuster fare.

I worked on this one, and it is really well done. Very smart and gives you things to talk about afterwards.

I'd rather not say, but it was on the post-production side (music, sound, etc).

It looks good, but kind of formulaic. From the trailer, I'd guess Don Cheadle's a good guy, working undercover. Jeff Bridges is his contact, who uses him to do something bad and then sells him out. Guy Pearce is the FBI agent whose investigation of the horrible thing Don Cheadle did leads to him uncovering Jeff Bridges. Looks like The Negotiator, with terrorists. Hopefully the trailer's misleading or there's a little more to it.

The trailer is misleading.

I'm hoping for a huge return of Guy Pearce, who stood out in only two (IMO) great films: L.A. Confidential and Memento. With Don Cheadle and Jeff Bridges co-starring, this could be a huge film. Hopefully.

i saw a preview for this a few months ago, i feel like, but it certainly does interest me in checking out and i like all the players in lead roles, so that always makes it easier to watch.

I caught this today and was underwhelmed. Cheadle was very good, but the story wasn't strong enough for him to carry the whole movie. The rest of the characters were all cardboard cutouts and the whole thing lacked suspense at every level. Even Pierce was boring and underdeveloped, just a disappointing movie all around for me.

I thought the movie was good, not great. Definitely enjoyed it since it was free (from the tickets offered at Best Buy).

By the way, maxfisher & Buttmunker, it's Jeff Daniels that's in this one...not Jeff Bridges.

Although a terrible film, Pearce's performance in Factory Girl as Warhol was superb. I've always been a big Don Cheadle fan, but this does look a tad formulaic.

Check out the Proposition as well. I'm also a fan of Ravenous, though it's not everyone's favorite.

Doesn't surprise me in the least. Guy Pearce has been destroying his career (and possible legacy) for years now.

Cheadle was good as always, but the film is beyond scared of itself. In thirty pages of press notes, the words "terrorism," "terrorist" or "Islamic" aren't mentioned once. Instead it talks of a "taut international thriller set in the treacherous world of covert counter-espionage operations."

You wouldn't know from the marketing or from the actors themselves that it's about FBI agents trying to track down a suspected Islamic terrorist before he can blow up more Americans. I spoke to both Cheadle and Pearce last week and neither would come close to admitting that this was a film about terrorism. Instead, they stick to the line that it's nothing more than an espionage thriller like the Bourne films, which is like saying "The Dark Knight" is an offbeat urban romance, as my colleague Kurt Loder so perfectly puts it.

C- in my book, propped up only on the shoulders of Cheadle's performance.

I've avoided reading the thread and reviews for spoiler reasons, but can someone just tell me if the movie has a strong left lean towards it?

So it sounds decidedly mixed, poor Steve Martin can't catch a break .

From the reviews, which are literally split at 50% at Rottentomatoes, you may like (or dislike) the film for the same reasons someone else dislikes (or likes) it. To me, the film doesn't make any bold statements one way or another, but I've already read some reviews that blame the film for being leftist simply because it was made in the Hollywood system. So who knows.

Naaa... not really left leaning, it seems to go out of the way to not interject specific politics. It's just too boring and sterile to get worked up about.

This New York Times review probably is the most accurate in terms of what the movie succeeds at and fails at.
