I posted a reminder on the TV forum, but as this show deals with movies and not everyone who reads this forum checks the TV forum...

Tonight on CBS @ 8 ET - AFI's 10 top 10

This time the American Film Institute picks the ten best films in ten different genres: animation, fantasy, science fiction, gangster, western, sports, romantic comedy, courtroom drama, mystery and epic.

I like these specials, even if they don't match what I would pick, they at least make for good conversation.

After the travesty of last year's "updated" list (three underwhelming post-1996 entries, and Goodfellas and Pulp Fiction are still stuck down in the 90's!?), these better be pleasing.

Rocky has to be the #1 for sports (it's one of the only ones I can stomach too, and at that it's a great character study). Also, I wouldn't necessarily call courtroom drama a genre. Subgenre, yes, but not a genre.

I'll probably tune in and out throughout the night. I tend to largely ignore lists and specials such as this, but it is always nice to have something on TV devoted solely to what I love: film.

Rocky will be in the list for sports, but I think that Raging Bull will be #1. Searchers will top the list for best western. That wouldn't be my pick, I'd choose Once upon a time in the West or Good, Bad, And the Ugly as the best but since there were produced in Italy they can't make the list. Fantasy will be Lord of the Rings, prob Return of the King since Fellowship was listed on the top 100 films of all time. Science fiction will be Star Wars or 2001. Animation is a hard call. I think that it will be Toy Story or Snow White. Gangster is another easy call because The Godfather will top the list, but for once I'd love to see Goodfellas get it's due. Epic is another easy call with Lawrence of Arabia or Gone with the Wind topping the list. Romantic comedy should be Annie Hall. Courtroom drama and mystery I can't think or call what I think will be on top. Courtroom drama maybe To Kill a Mockingbird? Mystery maybe Vertigo because I don't think Psycho counts. Maybe Chinatown or The Maltese Falcon?

Pretty good list for tonights show. Because they split it up in genres, you really got a nice variety of all movies, instead of their previous lists that seem to focus on alot of older movies that were way before my time. Caddyshack even made the list!

It was pretty easy to guess which ones were going to top the lists. I thought it was great to see McCabe and Mrs. Miller in the western list. Also Blue Velvet and Third Man making the mystery list was great. One I never would have thought would make it and forgot about was A Cry in the Dark. I've never seen it so is it as good as they made it out to be? Good to see that Goodfellas got #2 on the gangster list. My brother said he would have listed Godfather part 2 as the best gangster film just because it has the greatest scene in film history is in it.

Was there any other animated movies that would have been good enough for this list outside of disney who had 9 of 10 on the list. I don't see how The lion king would be #4 while Beauty and the Beast was #7. The only animated movie to be nominated for best picture deserves a higher rating.

Seriously it is Bullshit not having The Good the Bad & the Ugly or Once Upon A time in the west on the Western list or Once upon a Tme in America on the Gangster list. These omissions have seriously depressed me.

I'm not into Westerns, but my dad said the same thing. He was pretty disappointed with that list. I myself still cannot justify Courtroom Drama and Gangster as their own genres. Call me ignorant or not "movie intelligent" but they seem way to small to deserve their own genres. And I can't understand how Rudy wasn't on the Sports list. Maybe I'm just bias....

I'm also disappointed with some movies in general being absent, i.e. Jaws....

Usually they just do American movies which those aren't. I'm not sure how The Third Man gets to be called an American movie, but it's been on their lists before so I guess it gets a special pass.

Shrek making the list of animated films is the one that really sticks out like a sore thumb to me.

BTW, the presenters make sense (although they could have done much better than Jessica Alba), but Jennifer Love Hewitt for animation? She has done a few voices, but nothing really high profile. Someone like Robin Williams, or even John Ratzenberger would have been a better choice.

The way AFI gets around this is that all three of these film was that they were produced, backed, and made with money from people in Italy. I question how that aftects A Clockwork Orange and The Third Man since there both made in England with funds from people there and it isn't the case. Warners backed and funded Clockwork, and Third was backed by David O. Selznick. Since both are American companys or people, they can be on the list. I know that if the rule were diferent, Once would have been on top of the western list. And animation list would have been even with japan having about five films I can think of on that list. And I too think it's bad that Blade Runner is topped by ET .

-Sleepless in Seattle? Get the F**K out of here? No way does Rosie O'Donnell deserve to be on an AFI list for any movie she appears in!

-Also, I give props for Amy Madigan(Field of Dreams) when she was interviewed for not having any plastic surgery to her face. It is refreshing to see an actress in her 50's whose face isn't super tight and fake looking like almost every older actress these days who's gone under the knife. She did look her age, but I respect the fact that she didn't give into the pressures of Hollywood.

I was disapointed with the Western list also. The only ones that I liked from that list were The Searchers and High Noon. I would of taken Fort Apache over Red River.
Cat Ballou? No. They left out my favorite Gunfight at the OK Corrall- Kirk Douglas, Burt Lancaster. I would of even been happy with Tombstone, but that wasn't there either.
And one more from Clint- Hang'em High or High Plains Drifter would of made me happy.
That list they came up with I didn't like at all except for #1, #2.

i am not sure what category you would put it in (according to AFI's lists), but no "The French Connection"? i thought for sure that would be somewhere.

and i could have sworn that i saw a clip of "...And Justice For All" in the opening scroll when the show first began. and then i see it isn't on the courtroom drama list. did anyone else see that clip?

These lists always seem to generate so much anger.
Trying to think of replacements makes my head hurt, but I do see that there are plenty of great movies there.
